Pure Highway 600 reception problem solved .....

Hello.

I know that quite a few people add DAB radio and hands-free calling to their Zed with the Pure Highway 400/600 models.

I've had one for a while and it's worked well but I didn't much like having to plug the antenna power supply (it's a USB) into the supplied cigarette lighter dual USB output plug. So, I bought some fuse splitters to take a feed from the fusebox in the glove compartment and a 12v - USB out converter box from eBay.

It was an easy fit but when the Highway 600 was powered up there was almost zero DAB reception. Unplugged it all and tried it plugged back into the cigarette lighter. All good again .....

I did some research online and this is a 'thing'. Many of the 12v - USB converters appear to produce stray RF signals which swamp the DAB reception. Admittedly, Highway do say quite clearly in the instructions that you should use the supplied cigarette lighter plug but I wasn't expecting things to be quite so bad using the converter box.

I guess the alternative could be to buy a 12v cigarette socket, hardwire this in, use the supplied output plug and hide it all behind the trim somewhere but it's a bit less elegant :-).

For now my Highway is plugged into the supplied adapter and is just fine. But beware if you have one and are thinking of getting one of the 12v -USB converter boxes online. I'm sure there are some that would work fine and don't kill the DAB reception but I've no idea how you'd ever know without trying them out.

I went through 3 before I found one that worked with both the 400 and 600 models - but I also got interference from my sat-nav's 2g data updates.

On the Z4M - due to the issues with making aftermarket stereos look good - I ended up putting some cable ferrite cable clips on both ends of each cable, to dampen down the electronic interference. On my other vehicles I've found even the cheapest head units out-perform any of the 'plug-in' options.
