PS4 - opinions, thoughts, experiences

Mornin' all,

Been thinking about buying a PS4 for a while, just seen a great offer on a pre-release bundle with Destiny, just wanted to find out any owner experiences, gamer thoughts etc as been off consoles since the PS2, decided not to go PS3 at the time as just couldn't spare the time to play it but now I think I could make use of it. What are the non-gaming features like?

So just a bit more background - a couple of years back I bought a 42" Panasonic plasma for the living room, but being the skinflint that I am I never signed up to Sky or Virgin - just used freeview and a laptop for movies etc. As well as using the PS4 for games (I hear GTA V is coming out later in the year on the PS4 and I think my wife will like 'The Last of Us') is it any good as a home entertainment source or am I better off sticking with the laptop I have?
 
Not sure why people are using their PS3/PS4 for other entertainment than video games, I would just not use it for other purpose than gaming because I don't want it to be worn out by playing streaming movies or blu-rays discs... The machine (speaking of PS3) is just too loud when a disc is turning... and you have now Blu-ray players that are cheap and do a better job. Your laptop will also be able to play VOD and give you access to many more providers that are most likely able to provide you with better prices & choice to offer than Sony's only.

Some says Plasma and video games aren't the best mix, but tbh I never had the opportunity to test... :?

I think to buy the PS4 at the end of the year, I am sure we won't regret it. It has been selling so well the last months and more games are to be released (long waited The order: 1886 that I am really looking fwd to) :D

I bought a PS4 from eBay around 3 months ago (£250 with controller and CoD). Not used it much due to the weather but what I have played I've enjoyed (CoD Ghosts and Battlefield 4). Just want some new games to come out for it but also remember it has a great arcade you can download from too. Media Centre wise I have a Mac Mini eternally plugged into my Sony LCD too so any internet, Netflix etc usually plays through that, however I didn't want an additional player for Blu-Rays and DVDs so the PS4 was ideal since it brought gaming to the party too! A cool feature is plugging any headphones into the controller; essential for late night gaming.

Toyed with an XBOX One especially as my Gen 1 360 lasted me so long, but the PS4 pipped it with the new online experience and lack of blocky external power source.

When I do eventually get a chance to play it properly I'm sure I'll enjoy it even more!

Thanks for the input! Re: media centre/home entertainment, I just want to keep the number of units by the television down to a minimum, I'm not overly fussed about the media centre aspect of the PS4 as it'll do the basic stuff my laptop does currently - as well as physical media as I don't have a blu-ray or dvd drive on there - I also have a chromecast that was given to me as a birthday gift by the office which I have barely used - maybe will use that to play from network storage and do the bulk of the streaming work. Primarily the PS4 will be for games, it's just a nice fringe benefit if I can keep things minimal.

Re: Plasma - the only disadvantage (gaming related) I'm aware of is the potential for 'screen burn' where there are 'static' images, everything else (contrast, motion blur) to my knowledge is probably better handled by a Plasma than on an LCD :) That said, the amount of heat the thing chucks out is immense (much less energy efficient as a result) and it's quite a bit 'thicker' than most LCDs - not that it matters too much as I don't have it wall mounted. I wouldn't be able to replace it if it failed though, the manufacturers have all phased out Plasma for LCD.

+1 most of the above. Its a great games machine, only let down by the number of quality titles currently available. Thankfully there are more good titles on the horizon. It does run a handful of third party apps and i believe the PS3 was one of the better Netflix apps, but i have always ran netflix through my tv App so never bothered to try it on my PS4.

Last month Sony patched the OS to include 3D bluray support, and this is one of the other benefits of using it as your primary bluray player, regular updates. I cant say i have noticed an obtrusive noise from using it, but my PS3 (at the end of its long life) sounded like a jet taking off, so its all relative. :)

Regarding plasma, i intentionally switched form LCD last year and havnt looked back. Most newer plasma set have a pixel orbiting feature which minimises the risk of screen burn (although this is actually very rare anyway). I do get moments of "image retention" but these are difficult to spot, and resolve within a seconds. I have found my plasma to handle motion and dark gradients much better than LCD. Its a real shame its getting phased out, because as a technology its really hitting its peak.

Also - if anyone fancies some Battlefield 4 multi im "Bish_80" on the network. Just dont expect too much! :wink:
 
I'm a big PC gamer, but i'm actually going to use my spare PC to make a steamOS console, with xbox controllers, see how i get on in the console world - then maybe consider a PS4/xbox One later? who knows.

I recently played some incredible indy games on steam, i was blown away by how fun the most simple games are (compared to the stress of flailing around trying to play FPS shooters using a thumb joystick on a console..).

Did you play the Destiny Beta?? I enjoyed it very COD with aliens.

I picked the PS4 over the Xbox due to the exclusives the PS4 ones floated my boat far far more, looking forward to the Order and have already pre ordered Kingdom hearts, I also want to get The last of us I played it briefly on the PS3 and it was ace!

In short I cannnay wait!
 
I sold my xbox one and bought an r9 290 graphics card to put in my htpc
Confortably plays games at 4k resolution for 30fps with ultimate graphics enabled and 60 fps at slightly lower quality.
Bear in mind the htpc has a 400w power supply and an amd 5800k apu in and it's pretty impressive.

My point being, if u want a games machine maybe a computer is better option if u want a media center.

I have an xbox one controller that I plug in and I just bought the latest tomb raider for £3..amazing in 4k graphics.
Just like playing on an xbox one but better graphics.
Destiny hasn't been announced on pc yet so u do lose out on some games but most games are released for pc and are substantially cheaper than console prices

I also got titanfall and the season pass for £13
 
I've had my PS4 from release date and think its great. I mainly play Ghosts and BF4 but have just started playing The Last of Us which is excellent, If a bit scary.
New Call of Duty if out in November and I hope its better than Ghosts, the multiplayer problems with Ghosts ruins it for me especially when your paying to play online now.
 
i love my ps4. i play it on a 55inch sony lcd and it looks fantastic. i also love naughtydog games and its the reason i bought ps4 over the xbox one.only problem i have is every couple of months it decides it wants to constantly eject the disk however if i place the console vertically the problem goes away. am quite looking forward to driveclub. my psn name is roberrob for anyone that wants to add me :)

i played it and yes its quite scary lol. only problem is i am stuck about 5 minutes into it :(
 
Any thoughts on Destiny anybody?

I resisted buying as i wasnt overly impressed by the alpa, would love an opinion of anyone who is playing the finished article.

In the same boat...thought the Beta/Alpha was good fun but wanna see more about the Multiplayer before committing.
 
I picked this up last night... The gameplay/ controls are the most intuitive... But it looks pretty.

Only played 10 mins last night though.
