Prop bolts spat and prop doughnut knackered

Prop spat two bolts out a couple of weeks ago, Sounded awful with banging noise on transmission tunnel. Garage sorted and fitted new.

Noise returned at the weekend - banging on transmission tunnel area - but only in first under load. Appears prop doughnut and possibly bearing knackered probably as a result of bolts going AWOL.

Looks like a known issue - what causes the bolts to be spat out and I don't suppose BMW will assist on an 08 car / 40,000 miles??? Errrrr let me think!!

Do I need full prop with doughnut and bearing or just the doughnut and bearing? Ideas of part numbers and prices please?

The doughnuts are a known point of failure. And I could imagine that if that went it could cause vibration to spit a bolt out? And cause a bearing to go. I wouldn't think you would need a new prop?!
 
Thx MM, that sounds easier on the pocket as the bearing and doughnut come to about £180 plus a couple of hrs labour for those of us who cant hold a spanner!

Anybody got an illustration of the prop / doughnut / bearing so I can see what it looks like? I don't fancy spending £800 or more not knowing what I'm buying (I will go and have a look when it's under surgery).

Doughnut and bearing combined is just shy of £200
Add to that a prop shaft and it's another £600 - is the prop likely to have been damaged as well as the do-nut?

I'm not happy with this one, especially considering low miles of 40k. :headbang: :

Looks like the driveshaft doughnuts off an original Lotus Elan dating back to the 1960's!!! No wonder they fail.....

Your efficiency is German-like, oh sorry that means you will fail at 40,000 miles like my prop - ha - sorry - appreciate your help again.

One on eBay currently for £100 - used - might be the same as mine but might be a good buy?

As you can see, the doughnut and "centreing sleeve" are the same part no's.

Mike, et al,

Prop fixed with full replacement from a breaker - great service from FABDirect. Came with mint doughnut, very good centre bearing and generally a prop that looked in better, cleaner condition than mine. Next day service and very competitive too.

Talking of my old propshaft it was the centre mount and bearing / more to the point lack of bearing meaning my prop could do a merry dance with little or no support. Fixed by a good friend and mechanic this afternoon for a coffee next week! A good friend indeed :thumbsup: :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

Mike, thanks for your diagrams - I might order a centre bearing to have a good prop as a spare / avail for others on the forum if required.... :driving:
