Project Salvage Auction Rebuild

Hi All,

IU've just joined and popped a poast over on the newbie forum. I picked up a Z4 05 2.2 from a salvage auction and it arrived on my drive today. I'm hoping it's a fixer and i'm sure i'll need some help. I'll run a bit of a project thread on it here. Initial thoughts are:
  • New Front Bumper
  • An all over clean - tips welcome!
  • Fix the flat tyre so i can move it
  • figure out why the bonnet won't shut
  • check some rather worrying under carriage damage when it's on some stilts

I need to jack the front but its all plastic underneath. Where are the jack points at the front of the car?

There is no centre front jack point - you need to use the side jacking points behind the front wheels and get it on axle stands.

Good luck - front end impact + underside damage + bonnet not closing... could all indicate some more serious damage than is immediately apparent !

True, but looking at the photos the panels seem to be evenly spaced and no apparent damage - could simply be a faulty hood latch or similar. That said the way the bottom edge of the bumper is split, I would wager it hit a kerb or similar. Good news is all the panels are bolt on/off, so easy to take the wheels off, take the wings off and have a good look around.

I think it's gone up an embankment. Lower front bumper damage and mud embedded in the left side Tyres. there's some worrying damage to the underside that i'll get a better look at when it's in axel stands!

Might be that the damage at the front has broken the latch / points for securing the bonnet and that's why it'll not close.

There'll be new / used front ends on eBay.

Thanks, are these plastic boxes near the front wheel? They have what feels like a bole in them.

Yep, those are the side jacking points. Good luck with the rebuild

Brilliant, thank you!

i've just found the booklets in the glove box. FSH up top 2015, MOT until July and new disc brakes and pads front and rear in march this year!

Sorry another question. Does anyone know where i might find the paint scheme/code for the car? there's a bumper on ebay that might be perfect.

Paint code should be under the bonnet on a sticker on the drivers wing.
3 number code with a / then another number. mine for instance is 453/5 midnight blue.

It will be sterling grey - I *think* the paint code is on a plaque in the engine bay with the build date etc on it, but not 100% sure

Edit - there you go :)

Ok,

The car is up on jacks. Huge hole in the side wall of one tyre, the rest are ok but have crud between the wheel and side wall. It looks to me like i'm missing some under tray from the very front of the bumper and the one on the rhs is totally destroyed. Suspension and wishbones etc look ok. The most worrying thing is the damage to what i assume is the engine protector.

There's a load of pics here https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipNJuRG8qR8scAzyqc7NDYI_2LHHuMIU-OOlAb_U33FrPhuU3-gGa4JH4nJejAtZuQ?key=ZFJ4S3BqMENfRm1NTmZicmxEVU9RSnFXTDY4UjZ3

I'd massively appreciate some views on this and most importantly, is it safe on those axel stands!

Thanks

I can get a bumper for £250 plus delivery and i think i need this but looking for thoughts? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E85-E86-Z4-2003-2008-Complete-Front-Slam-Panel-with-Bumper-Support-Bar-073/202668316714?_trkparms=aid%3D555018%26algo%3DPL.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D58657%26meid%3D3d95fb2cf66f4fe8b89533f532764758%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D12%26sd%3D233199679953%26itm%3D202668316714&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851

//M Badges. That's an extra 200bhp if you ever get it going again so worth saving!

Any fluids in the car? Brake fluid? Coolant?

At a guess it might be the whole front suspension upgrade / replacement that's required. I'd be getting passenger and drivers side replaced at the same time.

Undertray
Front Springs
Front Shockers
Wishbones
Lollipops
Front Bushes
Two new tyres on the front
Front bumper
Alignment
Service
Clean it

You should get change out of £1500 - 2000 maybe a bit less.

Yet! Love when someone saves a car! Lovely car when it’s all sorted. Z4 parts groups on Facebook have a number in the correct colour for £70 which is a bargain.
