Programming key fob

Just a quick one, I've got a new key fob cut and I programmed the key to open and close the car with little issues.

However the key doesn't start the engine? Is there something else I have to do to enable the key to start the engine?

Two distinct systems within the keys, one is the pcb inside the key and powered by the key battery inside which works the door locking functions. The second system within the key is a small coffin shaped transponder chip that just sits inside the key, it requires no power and is read by the ignition barrel aerial when the key is put into the ignition. The EWS module checks that the transponder is one of the programmed keys for the car, if it is it releases the starter and allows the car to start. The EWS will also send what is known as a rolling code back to the key which will be checked the next time that key is used, That is an extra level of security. As you have found out its easy enough to programme the locking functions using the finger dance procedure listed elsewhere on this forum. To code the transponder chip side of things it has to be done with specific software with the EWS module connected to the laptop running the software.
Some people have successfully programmed new keys using an AK90+ key coding machine plugged into a Laptop, AK90+ machine and software can be found on ebay if you fancy a go, personally I couldn't get a key to code when I tried one. Ended up getting a mobile locksmith to do it with his 3k coding machine and he had to solder wires onto the EWS boards eeprom chip to read the data off that to code the key. That cost me £130 and that was with my own supplied cut key.

If by chance you have lost the transponder chip from your new key replacement transponders also on ebay here
