Problems with unlocking car with remote

Recently my key when I press it won't unlock the car. Do I need a new battery? And if so where do I get one from and what kind of battery?

Most likely a new battery needed. You need to make sure it's switched straight away, or it loses the coded information.

what I meant was Im not sure there is a battery that can be changed... but I might just be talking rubbish

my understanding is that the car charges the key while you drive. Is the other key ok? Do you do lots of short journeys which may mean it isn't getting charged very much?

I don't think the key gets charged by the car... Certainly doesn't on most cars.

They do on the Z4. The owners manual tells you to rotate the normal and spare keys now and then so the spare gets charged.

Taken from the owners manual! :poke: :P

1. Master keys with remote control
Each key is powered by an extended-life
battery that is charged automatically in the
ignition lock as you drive. For this reason,
use every master key at least twice a year to
keep its battery charged. Depending on
which master key is recognized when the
vehicle is unlocked, different settings are
called up and carried out in the vehicle, refer
to Key Memory on page 31.

Now the question is how do I tell if I have been using the spare key or the master. Any ideas how to tell the difference between the 2 keys. The key I use now I use all the time. I use this key at least 3-4 times a day on short trips to work, gym or store.

both of the keys are termed master...

though I don't actually have the one marked 'spare' :o

Try this out you never know....

By the way IK the car def does charge up the key.

I'm not talking about the valet key either.

I had the exact same symptoms with my 2nd key. The previous owner hadn't used the spare key in years, so the battery was dead. Even after recharging it wouldn't remotely unlock the car. I figured the battery was toast, being that it's 6 years old, but then I found this on another forum:

Quote:
1) Get in and close all doors.
2) Turn on the ignition and turn off quickly. (No more than 5 seconds) to start the process. Next action must take place within 30 seconds.
3) Remove the 1st key.
4) Hold the key up near your left shoulder (this is so it is closer to the remote receiver antenna - someone else suggested this).
5) Hold down the unlock button (which is button 1 on my key) and press the lock button 3 times (center button on my key). Release the unlock button and the doors lock, which confirms the operation.
6) Quickly repeat steps 4 & 5 for key #2 etc.
If it does not work, try doing the keys in opposite order. Key 2 then key1, vs 1 then 2.

If you have several keys, you'll have to reinitialize them all, quickly.

and it fixed my problem. Both keys now work fine, no dealer involvement necessary.
