Problems getting into car when it’s frozen

It has happened twice now; when I come to enter my car and it is frozen the window will not drop to allow me to open the door. Both times I have managed to prise the door open gently, but cannot then close it as the window is still up and will catch on the rubber seal. Has anyone else experienced this? I think eventually the de-icer kicks in and the window starts to work. Again here I am worried I may be damaging the motor by trying to operate the window when it is stuck.

Yep, happend to me twice in the last two weeks. Luke warm water applied to the top edge rubber seal worked straight away. No need to force anything.

This to me seems like a design flaw with the car, suffered from it a few times last year. The solution I tried was hot water (not to hot though) in a water atomiser and spray liberally around the window seals.

Use Gummi Pflege this protects the rubber, also prevent the above

I will try the warm water method next time, preferably before even trying to enter the car. Previously I just leathered it with de-icer. Hopefully I haven't damaged any seals so far.

EDIT: Was posting wihile above was posted. Will that Gummi Pflege stuff stop it sticking in the first place or just protect it?

EDIT2: I see it will indeed http://www.amazon.co.uk/Einszett-Gummi-Pflege-Rubber-Stick/dp/B005O0R4C8/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1327840561&sr=1-1

EDIT3: Just ordered some from http://www.einszett.co.uk/Gummi-Pflege.php

Our 1 series coupe did the same thing and it's what stopped us buying a 3 series coupe as a replacement. Quite common on frameless doors and no BMW solution

I guess you could always leave the roof down :P

Sorry

I've had this a few times too. I spray de-icer up around the upper edge of the window, plus where it meets the quarterlight. wait 2 mins, door opens.

Waiting to see what happens when the bootlid is frozen shut too... given the lid design, it's bound to happen.

... I keep the de-icer in there.

I spray de-icer along the frame of the windows. I never use even warm water as it may freeze immediately if the temperature is too low.

I've had this problem, moisture on the window seals freezes to the glass. I just put it in the garage every night now.

All my last 3 and this one does it.

More noticeable on theis one though as it needs to drop further. Wonder if it gets cold in Germany?.

Never had any issues with the old ones, never bothered with deicer or hot water, just pulled it open.

The 3 older ones I had the hard top on.

The issue with mine is the frost on the outside not with frost or damp on the inside, large drops stopping the widow dropping. Even when the door opens the window is still up its not stuck to the rubbers now. Dorr can not be fully shut due to it hitting the roof. As the car gets warm I can drop the window and raise again to reset it.

Let it freeze again, then run a plastic card between the window and the seal at the top of the door, it will not freeze again. Putting water on the windows does fix it, for a short time only and it will freeze again the next day, and de-icer is not good for the paint. Been over a week since we last had temps above freezing and no issues either on the Z or the wife's 1 series.
