Hi all,
I am going to put up my pristine 2009 E89 3.0i Gunmetal grey, 54k miles with black leather interior up for sale. It's just passed its MOT last week with no advisories. My question is, what would a realistic selling price be ? as looking on auto trader, eBay etc they seem to vary so wildly.
I am in no panic to sell, so if your advice is to wait until restrictions are eased and the weather turns for the better then it can sit it the garage gleaming away until then. It's had no expense spared on keeping it immaculate, and all the necessary preventative maint points carried out.
I have had the car 5yrs, with only 1 previous owner and am only selling due to the expansion of my family being beyond two seats, so I have had to buy a 5 seater.
So if anyone could give me some advice, I'd really appreciate it, and I shall be putting it on this forum first as I want it to stay with an enthusiast not go to a boy racer.

Many thanks
Steve

It would help if you stated the spec, m-sport/idrive/m-sport seats/wheels/tyre type & tread depth etc. Maybe some pics as well.
Rob

Thank you Smartbear
It has covered 54k miles, and been pampered to within an inch of its life,
All preventative maintenance has been done, ie salmon relays, wishbones, all bushes etc
Paintwork has been professionally treated/polished and ceramic coated.
It has heated, black leather sports seats with no damage.
All 4 run flats have plenty of life in them,
MOT was last week which it passed with NO advisories
The new owner may wish to have the wheels repainted, which I will INCLUDE IN THE PRICE, to be done to the new owners colour requirement rather than my choice.
I have owned this car for 5 yrs and only has 1 previous owner, I am only selling as my family now require more than 2 seats.
Both keys & all paperwork is included.
The private plate is NOT included in this sale.

Any questions, please email me on
[email protected]. or

You need to list it in the ‘for sale’ section of the forum and state an asking price... nice looking example

Also, no value in waiting to advertise it. List it here first, then try classified add on EBay.

Sell the kids keep the car  In fact such a good looking car, give the kids away free.

Keep the kids, sell the wife, less grief when you spend £500 on an essential bit of kit for the car.

Heres one from a stealer with similar spec / mileage -- https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2009-BMW-Z4-3-0-30i-sDrive-2dr-Convertible-Petrol-Automatic/373442658224?hash=item56f2eabfb0:g:U7oAAOSwTVtfhmtO

But then here is one advertised on here with similar miles but a few additional toys such as iDrive -- https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=127367

Hello,
Instantly I thought £10,000-10.500. SE spec will reduce desirability.. but

from your write-up which seems genuine and the fact it has only one previous owner I would say £12,000 (as long as you can convince someone it is a cherished car and have evidence to prove). I would get the wheels refurbed back to plain silver and advertise it as unmarked alloys. I can't see how offering a wheel painting service is going to help. It will delay any sale and may put people off as they will know the wheels are an issue, even if you are doing it for all the right reasons.
I do think mentioning you are a club "member" makes prospective buyers know you care about your car, if you advertise it elsewhere (which I would)

£12K :dizzy: have you not seen the siimlar forum car struggling to get £8500 & with a far better spec :( i think any offer remotely close to £9k should be seriously considered .
Yes it has a lot of positives but its not a £12k car

That is why I put the two links above, the 12k one has been there for ages and then the one on here at £8600 so I would have said anywhere around £9.5 to £10k would be a starting point.

I think (in fact I know) the secret of selling a genuine, nothing to hide, car is a good detailed advert to show people you are a genuine person. It goes for anything you are selling. Don't put "I'm in no panic to sell" in the advert, it gives the wrong impression. You either want to sell it or you don't.
I would put it up for sale on here and Autotrader with an honest and detailed description. Ebay is almost impossible to separate the "wheat from the chaff" these days and is full of junk. Pistonheads is 99% dealers who seem to add 20% just because it is a "CAR" audience. Facebook market place is a bit limited as not everyone is on facebook.
I have been looking for a car (not a Z4) for many months and have looked at literally hundreds of adverts. Below (in my opinion) is the epitome of how NOT to sell a car:
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202103099915432?model=M3&postcode=pe111xn&radius=1500&onesearchad=New&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=Used&sort=relevance&body-type=Convertible&include-delivery-option=on&advertising-location=at_cars&make=BMW&year-from=2012&page=1

That has been for sale for months; I wonder why? :?

I agree Drew, that advert would instantly stop me even staring a discussion, the guy will never sell with the tail end of that advert, better off starting £29.5 and accepting less.

No way would I pay a deposit without a test drive either - bloody muppet, not many people have £28.5k to spend on a private sale so you have to be sensible with the ad and what you expect from potential buyers.

The best part is that it is about £7,000-8,000 overpriced for what it is anyway. Mind you it could have been worse, he (or she) could have done the "one liner" (which is my favourite):

"M3, good condition, no test pilots, evidence of funds before I will talk to you, no offers, £70,000. If I don't get that I will keep it. PS don't email me cos I won't reply. Thanks"

I don't follow the market for M3 so have no idea of value but the ad is a stinker, I sold an Alfa Spider 4 months ago at £3500 for a 939 version, I wanted shot of it and got the part ex value so someone had a great deal, I just did not want a stealer making a grand on it for nothing

Car was up at £3750 but I still had clowns offering £2.5k and when I said I said I had £3.5k in part ex, they came back with an improved offer of £2.7k stating they did not believe the mileage of 76k on a 12 year old car, even when I had every MOT

OK, I see your point, but the OP's car (on the face of it) is WAY better than the average 12 year old 3.0 se. Maybe £11k to get £10-10.5k.

Lovely looking car, great colour.. as rare as the 3.0 are I think people are very particular about combo and spec and thats why some hang around, ive been looking at the e89 3.0 market for 9/10 months now and its very obvious the qualities of the fast movers.

Scuffed alloys, runflats non M sport seats and auto is whats going to hold this car back a little bit if its not pitched at the right price, Im in agreement with Mr Wilks and would say anything close to 9k is where this is at in a private sale. One thing I have noticed is the 3.0 seems to do well in a 10 day ebay auction, Id be trying that with a sensible reserve of 8.5k if you want to move it on relatively quickly

In the condition the car is in and taking mileage spec and number of owners into account I would say around 10K is where I would pitch it (£9995?), the other one on the forum seems way too cheap to me, sure it hasn't sold but sometimes even the cheapest cars don't. This I speak from experience trading cars for many years, I have had cars in perfect condition spec etc. and priced low but somehow for whatever reason failed to sell quick. Remember you can always drop the price at some point but it's harder to go up.

So you begrudge a dealer for making some cash on it? They don't make a grand for nothing, they have overheads and have to give a warranty which in the event of catastrophic failure will probably wipe out any profit they make anyway not to mention they have to pay VAT on top.

Those offers you received for 2.5K were most likely dealers scouting the classifieds for stock.

I was offered £3.5k in part ex so why would I sell to anyone at £2.5 or even £2.7k, I would just part ex at the higher price, if a dealer wanted it then £3.5 was a trade price - maybe what I should have said is making an extra grand above the part ex price I was offered or making a quick sale off my back.

I was prepared to sell privately at the same money as the part ex offer to allow someone to buy a great car at a cost that is way below market value which was £5 to £6k for the ones available on eBay at the same time.

I have no issues with someone offering £2.5 but don't insult me with a revised offer of £2.7k when I tell you I have an offer of £3.5k as part ex and use the I don't believe the mileage when I show every single MOT in my ads or you can check them on line.

In fact the car was sold at £3.5k and I threw in a service kit at that cost, I had purchased it but never had the chance to get the service done due to Covid.

Dealers or not these people are clots and need to wake up - I don't begrudge a dealer a margin at all, I purchase most of my cars from dealers for the exact peace of mind you mention and fully understand their overheads and margins and risks they run with cars.
