Pre Z4 advice

There are three levels:

'Business'
'HiFi Upgrade'
'Carver/Logic7'

If your car has cubbys behind your seats, it's a Business RDS set up. If you have large speaker grills, it's either Hifi or the top spec Carver; the latter adds a sub and a stronger amp I think (?). I have the HiFi and it's not too bad....the actual speakers are nowhere near as large as the grills suggest though.

Yup, absolute codswallop!

Only reason I ever put more runflats on mine was because the eedjit that did my MoT told me that it was illegal to have non-runflats on it without a spare and, like a fool, I believed him.

Scary that some professionals that people trust to give them accurate information just seem to make stuff up, alright for those of us that have a bit of knowledge (or access to people with a lot of knowledge here on this very forum :D) but the average Joe or Josephine of the street must be spending all sorts of money they don't need to because some git's just made something up on the spot :x

nope, not illegal... just a pain if you get a puncture! I plan to get the BMW mobility kit (http://www.amazon.com/BMW-Genuine-Mobility-Kit-Repair/dp/B000P5JO5M). But there's also those cans of expanding foam stuff that gets advertised. Though, not sure how I feel about those, anyone got an experience of them?
 
Just to bring this post up to date,

A slight change to my plans means I won't be keeping my Audi A6 2.7tdi S line Avant to go along with the Z4 after all.
No - 'er indoors, in her infinate wisdom, has suggested......no, that's not quite true.... demanded that we get a 7 seater (Zafira or such like) for "family" motoring, and therefore, I will be px ing the Audi for the Z4.

As this is HIGHLY likely to happen in the next 3 weeks, today I had a ride over to the local(ish) BMW main dealer, who has a lovely Z4 3.0i se Auto in silver, on a 54 plate, with 51k miles. Asking price - £12990.
Salesman had a good look around my Audi, then gave the report to his "senior" while I went for a nice 30-40 minute test drive in the Zed. Very nice it was too.
After returning to the dealership, I was left at the salesmans desk while he spoke to his manager to see what price he'd come up with for mine.
I took the precaution of looking up the value of mine on Glass's Guide before leaving and found it to be £9270 in excellent condition - which it is.
I was staggered when he returned to the desk and offered me just £8000 for the A6 and refused to budge on the price of the Z4.
He could see I was shocked and asked what I was hoping to be offered - to which I replied "nearer £9k.
Sadly, we stared at each other in silence, before I walked......

I know I could probably get a bit more if I sold the A6 privately, but after a couple of bad experiences selling cars privately some time ago, I'd prefer to just px it and avoid timewasters coming round to view the car.

So, the search goes on.........
 
If your moving back towards a 2004 plate then I suggest you seriously consider moving away from main agents and buying private or a specialist dealer. These are generally cherished cars, well looked after and low mileage, unlike buying a run of the mill 4 dor saloon. Condition is more important than age.

You can knock £2,000 of that price and sell your Audi private for trade price or more. Take a look at the prices and some of the spec of those advertised on here and feel free to post up any car you see for open and honest comment.

I must admit, rightly or wrongly, I somehow feel a bit more secure buying from a BMW dealer, especially with the 12 months warranty. I would also prefer to buy the Z4 and sell the A6 in one transaction particularly with also haveing to source the 7 seater to suit 'er indoors.....

I've just been on the BMW site and done a used search according to my wants / budget and have emailed them for details on two cars they have of interest. As you say and I ccompletely agree, as long as it is in top notch condition, I don't mind stepping back to a 53 plate either.

If I get a decent response from these two BMW dealers, I may well plod over and have a look and see what the offer me again on the A6. I mean, they can't seriously offer less than the above dealer did and may offer a tad more. They may also be a little more willing to drop the price a little on the Zed too..

Only stumbling block I have, is that I am going away on holiday next Friday night for 2 weeks (in the A6). This wasn't a problem with the dealer I met yesterday as he said if I agreed terms and signed on the dotted line and paid a deposit, they were perfectly happy for me to use the A6 for my holiday and would keep the Zed safely locked up ready to exchange when I get back. Can't see the other dealers being any different...... maybe...

I've also emailed a couple of independent car dealers who have nice Z4's on offer (as seen on Autotrader). They are more keenly priced, but I expect they will only come with a 3 month warranty so it's swings and roundabouts I expect.
I await replies from those too.

I shall be sorry to see the A6 go. She's never put a foot wrong since I've had it but the yearning for the Z4 means it has to :)

Well, It's taken an age, but I finally picked up my Z4 today.
It's a 3.0 Sterling Silver and it's in fantastic condition. Hopefully, I'll get some pictures done by next weekend so will post them here as soon as possible.
Had a slight scare on the journey home up the M40 though - when the Tyre Monitor light illuminated red and bleeped. Initially thought I'd got a puncture so stopped at Oxford services to check pressures - which were fine. It was only when I got home and checked the manual that I discovered that the system had to be "initialised". So I did that immediately and the light went out after driving a short distance. Phew !

I have a couple of quick questions if anyone can answer...

1) It has the electirc roof, which opens & shuts as it should with the buttons in the console. Am I right or wrong in thinking that it should open with the remote key fob ? I have tried but it doesn't seem to work. Other than the buttons in the center console, the only other way I can open or shut it is by turning the key in the lock and holding it in either position. I did assume the central locking button would open / shut the roof if I held the button in....

2) Anyone know a good source for good quality mats (other than Genuine BMW ones) ?

So which colour is it - Sterling grey or Silver?

Roof will only open on the key in the lock. Depending on thhe age either go to an Indy with Autologic and they can programme it to work else get something like a Reinhold module that fits in the console and does it on key blips.

I stick to OEM mats due to the sheer quality Vs most aftermarket cr*p
 
Roof opens when the keyfob is kept pressed, after pressing to open doors on post facelift not sure about earlier models
 
While I'm at it...

The Zed has Sat Nav too, but came with no manual. BMW have ordered one for me. In the meantime - does anyone know where I can download a PDF of the manual ?
