The funny thing is that the rectangular fog lights fitted to later editions of the Series 1 didn't suffer the same problem.

What are pre facelift manual boxes meant to be....5 or 6?

Pre facelift 3.0i are six speed, whereas 2.0i, 2.2i and 2.5i were all 5 speed. It was possible to spec a 6 speed box on the non 3.0i models though

So is that why my 2L pre facelift have a 6 speed manual gear box?

Yip. Nondizzyblonde has a pre facelift 2.0i with 6 speed box too IIRC
