PPF - possible DIY?

After recently getting the front bumper resprayed, I am tempted to fit PPF to protect the paint. So has anyone here attempted PPF themselves as I am trying to gauge if it is a possible DIY.

I assume the steps are to clay bar the paint and wipe with IPA to decontaminate the surface. Regarding fitting the PPF I guess just water, heat and patience are required?

I intend to buy the kit sold by Aliath.

I've DIYd a LOT of vinyl over the years. I'm by no means an expert by any stretch of the imagination but it took me a s**t load of attempts before I started to get a half decent result.

My point being it's doable but get plenty of practice if you want a decent finish

Hi Phillipw

My son owns Black Magic car detailing in Carlisle.
He also specialises in applying Expel self healing PPF, I help him do it, and believe me it is a time consuming, difficult, complicated and fiddly job. Would suggest you have a practice on something first, flat bits are not too bad, but curves are a difficult kettle of fish I’m afraid to say.

PPF and wrapping are really not easy to get right, looks simple but in reality BALL ACHE.

Heres me doing a tucked bulk sheet install on a lambo , no templates, one massive sheet cut on the vehicle , about as difficult as it gets. The templates above are easier but still ballache, im going to do my car in a few months, would you like to come over to the workshop and watch me apply it? ill give you all the pointers you need. This club i feel has supported me so im happy to give back to the members in any way i can.

I’ve heard using soapy water gives more scope for adjustment to the sheeting :?
Rob

you have a slip, stick and slide solution.... soapy water does work to a specific dilution as a slide solution .

Now that is a skill  . Cracking job

I’d have ended up with that sheeting looking like sellotape that sticks together when you’re trying to wrap a present

I don’t know why anyone would choose to do that themselves. The first sheet looked reasonably straightforward, then when you brought the lower one out - uh, NO THANKS.

X2..
First sheet, looked fairly straightforward..
Then the next (lower) section sheet - sheer artwork in creating a seamless / crease free, end product..
Well done Beedub & your team
