Power steering problem.

My power steering works perfectly on initial start up but if I turn the ignition off after a drive (short stop for petrol, shops etc.) sometimes on restart it's not working. Leave the car for a couple of hours and on start up it's working ok again.
Ideas?

Possibly the fairly common problem of Sticky steering.
Search for that on here or Google, and you will get many responses.

If not this, then it may need sent for Repair.
I took mine a good few years ago,to Power steering UK,who fixed it for around £500....and came with the same 2 years warranty BMW offer on their £1590 replacement steering rack.

If it's only Sticky steering, then many cheaper fixes available.

Hopefully this helps?

Thanks, don't think it's sticky steering though, researched that and it's not the same.

When it stops working, do you loose the power assistance, if so, do you get a light on the dash and loose the sports button function

Lose power assistance, light on dash, haven't tested sport button, I'll check that next time it happens.

That sounds like the ECU is on it's way out. You can remove the motor and ECU from under the dash, then send it off to ECU testing. Should cost around £300 to get it revamped.
It's quite tight to remove the motor, but it's doable. You don't need to remove the column.
If I can do it, anyone can

I can second that ECU testing are good for these repairs if it's the rack.itself,it can be fully repaired by power steering UK,used them as well.
Both companies also good to deal with.

Hope you get it sorted ok

Just an update in case anyone thinks I found a solution and didn't bother to update the thread.
I did absolutely nothing and it hasn't gone wrong since a couple of days after my initial post. I'm wondering if I had some sort of water issue as I did go through a huge puddle in the road a few days before it started playing up.
