Having come out of an 06 Porsche with the 11 speaker BOSE system I am struggling a bit with the basic unit in the BMW. I have read quite a few threads concerning upgrades and fitting subs etc, but I don t really want to get that involved. What I am after is a liitle more volume perhaps without the distortion I am getting at the moment with roof down at speed but essentially more quality. I guess the two will go hand in hand if I do what is neccesary to improve things/ Has anybody done a project likr this ? I don t mind keeping the business head unit as I like to keep things looking original.... Additional amp ? speakers ? whats suggested...Thanks in anticipation :D

Me also, I made similar comments when I bought mine back in Jan though I didn't ask for specific advice. I'd be interested in the outcome though.

On previous cars I'd have started with a new head unit but I like the way the BMW one integrates into the dash I don't really want to change that.

:)

The trouble with keeping the BMW headunit is the control you'll have over external amps, the only way to get a signal would be using a high to low level adapter or use high level inputs on an amp. I tried it this way but the sound was terrible so there was no chioce but to upgrade.

Yes i have, i tried using one for my subwoofer amp and the results were terrible, i also tried the high level inputs on the amp, these didnt work well either.

Either to be honest....addition speakers (wired in parallel) OR disconnecting the tweaters and replacing with door speakers.

Ive got some Vibe Space 6 speakers on order. There a 3 speaker component, should make an excellent upgrade to the standard speakers.

presuambly this upgrade is for the ones behind the seats ?

I would be interested in what different it makes.... :)

Nope this is for the front, My Z4 has the standard 6 speaker system, 6.5" in the kick panel, tweeters in the mirror covers and 4" behind the seats. I'm leaving the 4" rears for now and replacing the fronts. As these are 3 speaker components i'll be swapping out the 6.5"/tweeters and adding the speaker(3" upper mid) in the door which my system currently lacks.
