Possible coolant issue?

Hi all,

I started the car yesterday morning and a bing went off showing coolant level low. This went off and didn't go back on again when I took the key out and restarted the car.

I checked the level today and it was on or around the min level. I only used a little water to take it off min (a cup or so) but wondered if it's normal for it to use coolant? I didn't see any leaks when I put the water in and didn't notice the temp gauge rising when I was driving it.

Any ideas? Should I be concerned?

If it's done this and you've had the car a while.. Just monitor it now it's back at normal.

A cup? You did use distilled water right?

I'm sure a cup won't harm but no you don't use tap water it contains contaminants. Distilled water or better still a proper mix of the correct coolant is required.

Just keep monitoring it.

Cheers mate. It's going in for its mot on Tuesday so I might just ask them to flush and refill with the correct stuff. Better to be safe than sorry.

I've checked my water, so to speak and has needed about half a cup every 12 months to top up.

I'd suggest there's something not quite right there. As its a sealed system, it would only vent in case of overheating via the pressure release. I've only had to put about half a cup in after 6 years which I feel is fine due to losses via seals, rubbers etc.
