Poorly N52

So, had a Coupe at mine again yesterday. This one was a bit poorly, and sounding like a diesel.

Diagnosis needed in order to ascertain how to proceed..

Can cover removed to examine the state of the valve train, couple of minor marks to two inlet can lobes, which look like they've been caused by debris rather than metal to metal contact, rest of them looked commensurate with the 80k miles.

Now for the messy part, starting it up with cam cover removed.. I forgot just how much oil a timing chain throws off lol..

Anyway, noise coming from cyl 5&6 inlet. Put back together and cleaned up, will be fitting new hydraulic lifters in a few weeks, which looks like a ball ache of a job with a 5 and a half hr book time...

First one I've heard like this, does anyone know if it's common?

Mike

Apparently it's quite common..

BMW's answer to it looks like a fob off though..

Usually caused by to many short journeys & oil change intervals to far apart, ccv gets clogged with those conditions as well :(

Sad thing is this is my best mates, car was sold as private by a trader. He even answered the phone as such and such cars. Dickhead.

Oh well karmas a bitch!

I kick myself all the time for not noticing it on the test drive.

Sometimes fresh oil & a decent length run can quieten them right down again, has he given that a go?

Yeah Rob as soon as we got it put a fresh lot of Millers 5 30 in. Then some Wynns lifter treatment when that didn't work :(

Just lucky Mike knows his s**t

Would have to disagree with the first part. It's caused because BMW designed it wrong and the oil drains back out of the lifters. I used mine daily for 50 mile round trip and had the issue virtually from new.

Maybe if I changed my opening words to "maybe caused" instead of "usually caused" it would be more accurate

Yup, BMW's resolution is 3 stage.

First, perform the bleed cycle and see if the customer is happy..

If not, replace the lifters and see if that cures it.

Final stage is a redesigned cylinder head..

Nope.

Back in 2009 they did the bleed which didn't work so chsnged the head.

Shortly afterwards they stopped changing the heads and just replaced lifters with limited results.
