Rags,

you are prolly right. the depreciating cycle may not have ended. BUT,..... it is coming soon as the hits have already come so hard. But, I want a pristine one which is why I bought now rather than wait for another 2 years.. How many sub 10,000 mile z3m coupes are available now? Tough to find a stock, unmolested one.

The question is the need to sell now. If you don't need to let it go now, the rewards could come in 3 years or so. Saying that, if I test drive the 1M and like it a whole bunch, I may just let it go but I'm struggling to see how that would be possible. I have a soft spot for MCoupes...

People are out there for a bargain and I feel that the z4m is too raw for some and this really makes them a hard sell against cars like the cayman and the coxster!

if you are looking for a drop head, you would not consider a boxster and a Z4MC in the same buying equation... a Gayman is still a lot more expensive to buy than a Z4MC for the same model year... I know that if finally summon up the courage to sell my Z4MC to buy a Z06 my buyer would be someone who wants a Z4MC and nothing else...

BTW, I have no idea why the Z3MC got such rave reviews vs. the Z4MC - in stock form the old car is bordering on the rubbish. It is way too soft, it understeers even more than the Z4MC, the brakes are well and trully shocking, and the E30 rear axle... well, it is an E30 rear axle. Did I mention the lack of 6th gear making long journeys tiresome or the cramped driving position unless you change to bucket seats and a smaller OMP Corsica wheel? Before the ex-Z3MC owners set upon me - I used to have an E30 M3 and a host of other E30s, so I know how they handle, and also I get to drive what is arguably one of the best Z3MCs in the World pretty much whenever I want to, so I think my opinion is more fact based than most....

I agree but i think part of the charm is that it is quirky and unique AND flawed..

I don't think it is a better car, no way, I just think that the z3mc has it's desirability as well but in no way would I ever say it is better than the z4mc IMHO.

PS : I also think that anyone who wants to buy a z4mc will not be cross shopping with anything else but a z3mc.......

Interesting stuff Cheburator, especially your experience of the Z3MC... the motoring press seem to have a real hard on for it, even over the Z4MC. I like it's uniqueness and rarity, even it's quirkiness, but I saw a yellow one in Bexhill a few weeks back.. Only a mother could love it, and those orignal wheels are painful...

You're right re the Gayman. I set my budget at £20k and there was no way I could get a 3.4 Gayman S for that money, never mind the fact I'd want a nice colour, nice options, so I was purely in the market for a Z4MC. Very happy I have one now :D

bought my z4m for circa £23k in apr 2010 and struggled to achieve £21k and settled fir a bit less a few days ago.

£2k depreciation in 12 months? Sounds brilliant, you lost virtually nothing....

Back in December 2008 when the price drops on performance cars were REALLY hitting hard and the whole market was ruined, ZMCs were losing a grand a month. Pre-reg E92 M3s were being offered for £10k off list. In fact anyone who bought their ZM before 2008 has probably had a virtually depreciation free 3 years....

....I say that because current trade in offers seem to be about £2k below what I was offered Christmas 08!

Don't get me wrong, I get a hard on for my brother's Z3MC every time I see it, but we are talking about a G-Power Evo III car, which cost G-Power around EUR80,000 to built. A Z3MC with a supercharged S50B32 and 510Bhp (lots of internal work to lower the compression), Schnitzer headers, 100 cell cats, G-Power dual 3" exhaust, Fidanza flywheel, 6-puck ceramic clutch, 6-spd gearbox with an oil cooler, 40% LSD with an oil cooler, Porsche GT2 brakes, Bilstein Custom Coilovers, H&R Cup ARBs, Leather Recaro SPG seats, Heigo roll cage, Breyton wheels, full AC Schnitzer aero package including side-skirts...

This car is miles better than any Z4MC, but I guess the only standard item left in it is the body shell :P

Last year around this time I have bought a used Z4M roadster (import from Germany). When I look at the prices of a similar Z4M now being sold by a BMW dealer in Germany then the price is exactly the same!

Not sure about the 'classic in the making' thing TBH.....I mean firstly the price of fuel and insurance will continue to rocket, affecting values, and secondly, well yes it did only sell in small numbers.....maybe because not many people wanted one? Once depreciated, then the less well-off buyers who might have bought, but couldn't afford new, come in to the frame....so I can see them levelling out, but then they eventually hit that point where they become an elderly 'M' that everyone knows has probably been thrashed and/or will be expensive to maintain.....so keep a really good one in really good condition and it shouldn't lose too much, but over and above that......
