Yep, definitely agree it's a no brainer to spend £hundreds on different tyres because your driveway isn't gritted. :thumbsup:

Obviously Spaldingski has no hills so it doesn’t matter much
 
Even full winters struggle stopping on ice that I’ve been driving on @ -8 & below in the EU in an AWD

After watching numerous clips of people crashing their cars in slow motion in that little bit of snow you had in the South, I bet they’re all wishing they’d invested in tyres suited to the weather. And that’s the point, you can choose not to drive if it’s snowing unless you’re already out and it starts to snow.

I don’t understand the expense logic either, tyres wear, so the overall cost if you keep a car for three years is not significantly different if you do reasonable miles, the outlay is the alloys but they can be had cheaply enough, certainly less than your insurance excess.

However if you only keep your car for a few weeks, or rather spend your money on shiny bling rather than trying to make it stop in cold conditions, we’ll what can I say :P
 
Maybe the law needs changing in the UK sars?

When it snows & settles, any vehicles on summer tyres are immediately banned from using the roads

Cross or full winters only

Then do as the Germans do, impound any car found breaking the ban with a fine plus cost of replacing all 4 tyres before u get it back
 
My decision is easy over on here in Colorado, USA: all-season, all year, because the only time you can be 100% sure you won't encounter snow/ice is the middle of July through the middle of August.
In the winter, if it snows, or even seems like it might snow, the Z stays in bed. Because it can get to 12" really quickly and she's not plowing through it without bottoming out. That said, it sometimes gets very sunny and 50 degrees F (10 C) in February and I can drop the top for a few hours if the roads are clear.

No justification for changing the law in UK we don’t get continental winter conditions often, most accidents are caused by driving too fast for the conditions.

Whilst I don’t believe that it should be legal requirement to fit three peak tyres in winter, it should be illegal to drive in snow or freezing conditions with summer tyres. Car manufacturers should also be fitting family cars with all season tyres as standard and certainly the police and ambulance service should have them.

Any idiot can drive fast, it is the inability to stop that causes collisions. The skill is in awareness, anticipation, braking and the tyres on the car.
