Yesterday I was called to go and document a police raid that was begining to gather some pace.
We had no idea what we were getting into there was no info as the police weren't aloud to tell us anything, and a statement was to be sent out by their press office. We thought it was a big drugs raid. Next thing 8 police cars/vans, a van full of police dogs and a riot police van arrived. 17 riot police in all, with shields, tazers the whole lot! Things were getting interesting, and we thought we were stumbling on a really big story. They blocked off this road which was about 1/4 mile long and after about an hour started to march toward the suspects house. Me and another reporter ran after the police me with a fairly long lens so I could get in close.
They finally arrived at the house which over the years has been renowned for dodgy types living in it. They knocked on the door, no answer so they ploughed it down and all went into the house. 20 mins later brought out the suspect.
Now we were pretty disapointed as we thought it was a big drug raid and they came out with one guy, also thought it was completely over the top with the amount of resources for one guy, turns out it was a domestic violence offence. So we left feeling slightly disappointed.
Anyway today we recieved the police statement and apparently the guy had tied up his Mrs and tried to cut off her hands and feet with a meat cleaver.....
Not quite sure as to the background yet but he was also involved with a small drug circle.
So in the end it was maybe a good job they had all the gear!
Some sick people around, quite a small town so this was pretty high on the excitement scale. I would post the pics but im not sure if I can use them yet for police and suspect safety. Anyway was quite an experience and apart from being told off for getting too close a few times the riot police were pretty good banter! Might be on Police Interceptors in a few weeks
