PO171 and PO174 banks 1 & 2 too lean

I am getting the emissions warning light (DTC, EML, whatever it’s called), come up on an almost weekly basis.

It first occurred on a short run, about 6 weeks ago, involving about 30minutes of around town driving, then 10minutes of 70mph, ish, driving. After driving for around 5 of those 10, high speed minutes, the light came on. No change in engine behaviour so I called the AA to hijack their code reader, and 1 live code was reported. P0171 - Bank 1 too lean.

The AA man discovered a perished rubber cap, somewhere on the intake. He believed this to be the culprit, so I got a new rubber cap and slipped that on.

Not so long ago, after a short high speed run, the light came on again. With my own Mickey Mouse code reader on my phone, two codes now appeared, P0171 and P0174. Banks 1 and 2 too lean.

The facts are:
• The light only seems to come on at high speeds, or high demand (fuel issue perhaps?).
• The light causes no change in driveability at all.
• The light remains on until cleared.
• MPG figures and performance remain unchanged.

So far, the only thing I have done, is apply a dose of Redex when I filled up, as a trial. Doesn't seem to have had any positive effect so far.

I wanted to air this and get people’s opinions and views on what options I should take. Do I check everything inlet related, or everything fuel related, or both (what first?)? I understand a certain amount of parts will have to be replaced as an elimination process only, but I want to keep this to a minimum as much as I can.

PS. I have search this on the forum and there is a specific video on youtube but I can't seem to find the solution.

Anyone have any ideas?

I've had exactly the same and the good news is, its a cheap fix - about £20 in my case, if doing it yourself. All you need is a flat blade screwdriver to undo three or four Jubilee Clips. ( My only issue was they gave me the wrong replacement pipe - 2.5 when I needed the 3.0L version)

See this post which should help, it will probably be a small split somewhere in the Air Intake boot. Its about half way back along the right hand side of the engine block. Just follow the pipe backwards from the Air Filter and then carefully examine the rubber section.

Gents,

I recently had the same problem when I bought my 2004 3.0 (Banks 1 and 2 too lean). It had the same codes showing but no EML when i bought it until i got the car home. :o I'm guessing the guy I bought it off was just resetting the codes when I went to view the car (buyer beware as they say).

I was going to just replace the 02 sensors but luckily I did a bit more research and after reading the above post and Number5's link I spotted the rubber hose to the noise tube had a 1 inch tear and the spigot that has a small pipe hooks in to was split also. Exact part sourced (£28) from my dealership and no more errors!

Thank you to all the guys who feed their knowledge back in to the forum!

Cheers

G :)

Sounds like an air leak to me! As said earlier, a split hose on the inlet side is a key problem to look for. This could also be caused by a loose fitting oil cap or dipstick on the M54 engine. Lean running can ve very dangerous so please get it sorted ASAP!

Look for splits in this hose (from the centre of the image going to the upper right):
