please help

ok folks im new to the forum so i have my fingers crossed someone might beable to help me

i parked my Z4 in the garage but left the ignition key in it overnight ( engine off of course ) the key was 1 turn away from being taken out

next day the battery was flat so after charging it i noticed a couple of thing not working

1) the rev counter and speedo are not working and theres no mileage reading

2) no power to the roof

i checked the fuses and they seem to be ok
the car is a 53 plate 3.0l

Hi Wayne, welcome to the forum.

Doh! Sounds like the car has gone into transport mode. If you do a search you'll see what I mean - think it stops the aircon as well. IIRC you need to get it reset at the dealer.

Otherwise, are you sure the battery is back to 100%? The car can do funny things when the battery starts to get low.

i charged the battery for about 4 hrs and the car started straight away but ill put it back on charge and see what happens.

any idea how much it might cost to be reset at the dealer? hope it wont come to that
 
gmetcalf, makes a good point, not sure about the roof in the transport / transit symptoms. Did it definitely work before? That is, you haven't got the rear shelf up or anything? Check the AC and if that's not working properly there's a good chance it is in transport mode. People's car's have started with a low battery, it's just other things that go screwy. You may want to get it checked, especially if it's the original one, make sure this hasn't killed it. I think I read that Halfords offer a free check - also a good place to buy a replacement if you need one - on price and warranty.

If you need a reset, then this is usually a diagnostics charge. An indi with the appropriate software would be a better bet price wise. If you have a look under Dealer Feedback you may find one in your area.
 
the roof motor was replaced about a year ago by the previous owner so i cant see it being that and i had the roof down last week so i know its ok

might just have to bite the bullet and go to dealer
 
I don't think it was the roof motor - but if you have the boot shelf up at all that will stop the roof from operating - if it hasn't been used for a week then there is a chance you may have knocked one of the shelf levers.

If the air con is working then this sounds more like a low battery issue. Give it a full charge and see from there - test with a mutlimeter is you have one / can lay your hands on one.
 
I would disconnect the battery. Charge it a lot longer, recoonect and then see what happens.

Chances are the battery is only partially charged after 4 hours, especially as you've been starting it, testing electrics, etc, etc.

Worth doing before going to the dealers

I had the same on a 540 so this might work: disconnect battery for min 10 mins. Make sure its fully loaded (8hrs min charge time) then do the following soft reset procedurestart up procedure:

1. Reconnect battery
2. Ignition on (first click)
3. wait 10 sec
4. off
5. wait 10 sec
6. ignition on
7. wait 10 sec
8. off
9. start engine

hi all

the problem is now sorted

roof is working and clocks are working too

how did i fix it ? well read on and you'll find out

my brother in law came to my house ( he owns a Z4 ) and came up with the idea of removing the fuses 1 by 1 to check them
all. so why i did this (and it is quite uncomfortable squeezing round the passenger seat ) he got himself sat nice and comfy in the drivers seat. All the fuses were fine so it could'nt be a fuse problem, or could it?
he then switched on the ignition, waited a few seconds, pressed the button to open the roof and OPEN IT DID.

:D

he then tried the lights for the clocks and they worked too so he fired her up and the rev counter was working.

job done

i tried for over a week to sort this on my own and was getting really cheesed off at the thought of going to a main stealer

then the golden boy comes round, sits in my drivers seat drinking my tea and bingo its sorted

anyway if this problem happens to you just try what i did and ya never know it might save you a few quid
