Playstation 3 query

Iv recently acquired myself a shiny new PS3 to play with and so far am very happy with it. Its been a few years since iv been into consoles but I used to play actively on the xbox live network with an original xbox a few years back.

Now what im hoping someone will be able to advise me is the connecting of the PS3 to a home network so that I can stream vids and music from my pc to my ps3 and watch movies etc on the tv.

At the moment I have 2 pc’s, the ps3 and a wii connected to a wireless router with a 10mb/s internet connection, this works fine with each connecting easily to the internet and me re-kindling some love for online FPS with killzone.

So come on people, anyone care to run me through the basics of setting up an appropriate network and let me get the most out of my ps3.

One last qn, I was after getting a driving game to play with, what are the best options, I was considering grid?

There's a wealth of information over on the AV Forums.

The PS3 can sniff out cntent on your pc if you've got Windows Media Player 10, or Twonkyvision, or Tversity. You don't really need to set up a network, if your pc has one of those applications you just hit "search for media server" in the PS3 menu to find the content.

Re driving games, I've only really used GT5 Prologue. Allah knows when the full version is going to come out. Race Driver grid is ok, but I didn't really get on with it. There's a free demo on the Playstation store.
 
Yup - ive tried tversity (free) and media sharing in WMP10 and have actually found the WMP option by far easier and actually faster then tversity
THere are lots of tutoials/you tube videos out there on how to set it up - its simple
 
If you really want to have fun,,,,set up a Quake server on the network with some PC's! :wink:

Pick up Burnout: Paradise on the cheap for a fun arcade style driver, that should tide you over until Gran Turismo 5 comes out in the fall.

Ah, those were the days. Quake II on the Edge (Q2DM1). Or any of the CTF maps.

GT5 Prologue pretty good - but still waiting for the "real" thing. Burnout Paradise has a very "arcade" feel to it (as previously mentioned), but is strangely addictive. Motorstorm also requires "suspension of disbelief" but hugely entertaining in a "pick up and go" kind of way.

Don't worry, I'm 27 and I remember playing Wolfenstein 3D. First time round and about six months ago.

Wolfenstein was good, but Doom 2 was where the violence really got out of hand. Nothing says "video nasties" quite like the chainsaw.
 
crikey how old were you the first time round - mustve been around 10?

must be pretty quick to play wolfenstein on Todays' computers :D

my computer when I was 10 was BBC micro with a whopping 32k RAM...

Luxury. ZX81 with 1K. 3 hours typing a "game" in from Sinclair User magazine, 3 hours debugging, and then find out it is rubbish anyhoo. Progressed to a BBC B, but really wanted a Spectrum (damn my too sensible Dad and his "educational first" theory) for Jet Set Willy et al. Only when Elite was released did I ever feel smug!

Programming games for the beeb was a similar experience... one which I enjoyed so much I'm now a programmer!

Waiting (and listening) ages for games to load from tape only to find that the game hadnt loaded properly was another joy...

may have to check out that link :thumbsup:
 
Started off with Doom myself and Quake, online i started at with Quake 2, then Quake 3 and a bit of Half Life/Team Fortress....went from there to Counterstrike (plus CS Source) and ran a clan with a friend, played that for years but stopped in end....started playing Team Fortress 2 when it came out and played it quite a bit but not since last year now. Also have a PS3 but seem to use it for BD movies rather than gaming atm.

Yeah, I was 10 or 11. Just before I went to comprehensive school. Ran it on a 386 SX 8mhz with 1mb of RAM. My dad upgraded it to 2mb of RAM a little later at the cost of £100!

IIRC, the version I played recently was a Java port so it was still playable.
