Hi all, they had her all afternoon-i had booked her in because i had the emission light come on when i hit 70 mph  -they informed me i did not have a cracked manifold (phew)-but they had to do a cat software update, apparantly my car was running on the old ecu software-does this make sense to anyone?-as tbh i cant understand how the car was running ok when new?
They told me its similar to laptop updates, but surely thats because its from internet?
Any thoughts appreciated-thanks

I've heard of cars running different versions of ECU, but cant see how that would be required to solve the issue you had. But then I'm not at expert... :(

ecu software is constantly being updated to solve issues that can arrise over time. Your fault has always been there but its only recently that its shown itself.

Some cars will last a lifetime without needing a software update but then some will need several, its just like parts failing on your car, you may have a big problem with bits failing on your car, but then someone with the exactl same car wont have that problem.

Hope this helps a little

Mike

Thanks-indy said my car has been too sensitive with the emission light coming on-the update broadened the parameters apparantly.

My local dealer always checks for software updates when I take my cars in and it appears on the invoice - not as a cost item as they are normaly FOC. Perhaps it depends on the dealer.

The dealer rang me a few months ago to advise me of an update and to call in when passing. Free coffee, chat, look at the new stuff and half and hour later all done FOC. Yes a good ploy to get me in to look at new cars but hey that's what they are in business for.

I would imagine a while ago BMW were getting lots of warranty work referred back due the emission lights comming on. Their engineers will then evaluate the units returned and find that they were slightly out of specification but perfectly okay. so they widened the sensitivity band at which a fault occurs on the cars software and updated the cars at the next service.
