Phantom break-in

So my brother who lives in London went to his 630 convertible this morning to find the door ajar and inside compartments left open. Nothing taken as he leaves nothing to take – no damage, window and roof intact.

The police tell him he is the 3rd BMW owner in the area to report similar incidents that morning.

I know I read something about key fob cloning; but I don’t think this is the same thing as they did not try to steal the car, they were presumably just looking for cds, phones, sat navs, etc.

Anyone had similar incidents in their area?

Before anyone asks – yes he definitely locked the car, as did the people involved in the other “break-ins”

very odd. my mum left her ford kuga unlocked (or so she believes) a few weeks ago and the next morning the tailgate and passenger door was open as was the glovebox.

i said it seemed strange that the only time she ever left the car unlocked, someone had a look around inside.

it has a key-less entry system on it.

What area of London please? I live in London too and I'de like to know if its happening anywhere near me

Posh part of London
Hampstead, London NW3

Lots of nice cars to be found in that part :o

Had same to mine 2 years ago in Ealing. No sign of break in, my bag and cards etc all taken, sunglasses, iPod etc gone too. Zero sign of damage, just door and boot open......no idea how and when etc....

A friends dads brand new vw golf had the same thing

On their drive way over night, doors were left wide open satnav and cds gone from the glove box

It too has keyless entry

If you leave your key to close, (within range) and someone touches the door handle it will unlock. So assuming your driveway is in front of your living room and you have the key in your pocket while watching tv people could open your "locked" car

Absolutely FALSE STATEMENT.

Dd you try the above?

You definitely did not.

Any car having a keyless entry won't unlock unless you are within 1m.

Guy at work had a loan car once with keyless entry, but he didn't know it, and couldn't figure out why he couldn't lock the doors, cos every time he went back to check, the door opened!!!

My driveway is next to my house, runs parallel with the back wall of the living room so sat on my sofa I am about that away from the side of my car

Key on sofa car unlocks

So how is this a false statment??????

I've heard rumours that you even open any car with remote key lock via a cell phone if you can catch the signal somehow. I believe you can test this by calling someone on his cell, standing next to the car and holding the cell phone near the door. On the other side of the line, the owner pushes the unlock button holding his cell next to the key and it would unlock the car, regardless the distance.

But not sure whether this was a hoax or not... :|

Understand the points of keyless entry, I am sure each marque has different methods of entry. With my wife's car you need to push a button on the door handle whilst having the keys somewhere close by.

In this case the 630 cab was not keyless entry and the keys would have been a good 20yds away!

Is it possible that someone can use a mechanism just trying different frequencies to unlock a bmw? Same sort of technology that allows them to clone the fob; but not able to overcome the imobiliser...

How else can you explain unlocked cars, open doors - without damage?

My personal car and wifes car are keyless as are another 6 cars I have in my showroom, none of them work outside a 1m range.

Come and check for yourselves.

What you are stating is not true.

I personally checked it the moment I read it.

I have had a keyless car since 2007 changing it every couple of months and never had a problem.

I also took a video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-5n5mmOULc

1m is the max range.

A mere 0.5m difference in distance, as shown in the video does not unlock the car.

Other options of keyless cars include toyota, bmw, etc..... but wont make a video of each one.

Now:

The interesting part on how they do it.
