Performance upgrades Z4

Hi guys,

Thinking of moving from an Impreza WRX to a 3.0l Z4. can the Z4 engine be remapped or tuned at all? not talking astronomically but 30 - 50 bhp etc?

Many thanks

If you're talking about a e85/e86 then you're looking at 5-15bhp MAX - unless you super/turbocharge it.

If you're talking about an e89 (which is already turbocharged) then it's a matter of 'do you feel luck, punk' as to how much you extract.

Thanks, it would be the e85/6 what do they pull to 60 as standard?
Depends on which 3.0 it is as there's a bit of power difference between the years/models.
  • 2003-2005 3.0 had 231ps/228hp and 5.7s to 62mph
  • 2006-2008 3.0si had 265ps/261hp and 5.4s 0-62mph

to get extra 30-50bhp you will need alot of money, it's probably cheaper to get 400+ out of wrx than 280-290 out of m54 engine

you sound just like my mate at work who owns a classic uk turbo. constantly going on about 0-60's like it's the be all and end all

an n/a engine will never get 30-50bhp from simple engine mods, only turbo's will.

+1 we've all got one mate at least obsessed with 0-60.

personally putting the car on a diet (and one self too!) would yield better speed through bends overall improving lap times.

Obviously if you're just racing your mates on a dual carriageway or a local tesco car park then you're not looking at the right car.

3.0 z4 is comfortably quicker than a standard WRX.

There isn't a big power surge like you get with forced induction, but its a better drivers car all round IMO. Not to mention better in every other area..

Good to notice to supercharge à Z4 you have to have à pre facelift with the M54 engine, the N52 can't be charged.

... on my list should I win the Euromillions

slightly diverging from the original point (and for the record, I'd own a scoobie in a heartbeat but this does make sense)

the rolls royce merlin engine of spitfire fame started out normaly aspirated producing around 1050 hp, it progressively got more powerful over its life by the addition of a single and later two stage supercharger up to around 1700hp, power gains like this are nnot feasible without turbos or blowers, maybe just go for an M and be done with it.

CAI (+11hp for $350USD) but intakes are always sketchy
ECU remap (+4hp $350USD) a Shark injector does not produce enough power to justify the cost
The two above combine for a ~17hp increase

Cam upgrade (+7-10hp $940USD) and this is the only one I actually believe will work

If you combined all the above, you may gain 20-25hp, but is it wirth it?

Depending which WRX (bug eye model?) the 3.0i should be equal, if not a little quicker....

"Tuning" 3.0i zeds is a fairly popular question on the forum, but sadly, the least expensive way to up the power safely is to sell the 3.0i and buy and ///M.

one could always change the final drive if 0-60 is the answer - who actually uses the upper ranges of the top speed?

I would have thought a 3.0 SI with a 2.5 final drive and a lsd would be a pretty rapid car - might even stay with an m

(is preparing to be shot down in flames and exposed for knowing bugger all about cars ...)

Where are you quoting from? I've seen conflicting information with regards to 0-60 ...

Parkers seem to quote faster times than others, 5.5s for 3.0/3.0si manual coupes (2006-2008)
http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/reviews/facts-and-figures/bmw/z4/coupe-2006/

Autotrader, 5.7s for a manual coupe. I've seen 5.7 as the more popular quoted figure.

Although, as shown in a random Top Gear episode I saw, lower powered 4wd cars can still out drag more powerful 2wd cars in less than ideal conditions (wet/damp). I may be wrong, but I doubt many Z4 owners are in to racing people off the line at traffic lights, especially with their cranky 1st and 2nd gear changes

It was from general knowledge, from reading magazine reviews/brochures/websites/etc.

Some websites claim 4.5s for the Z4M, others claim 5.2 - so I've just used a rough 'average'.

genereally this ought to caviat with some N/A engines arnt able to be tuned loads.

a standard 2.0l zetec 4 pot ford engine can quite easilly be taken from 130bhp to 180bhp without tubo/supercharging. 220bhp is possible but somewhat more complicated and expensive.

it does seem that the 3.0i is one of these engines but tbh i find the delivery of power to be lovely and lets face it the difference in terms of distance is proabbly nothing when driver ability is taken into account.

180bhp is easy enough, ST170 engine and ECU! lol But 220bhp is not cheap... Head work (if not a ST170 head), cams, throttle bodies and a remap or standalone puts at £1500-£2500+

But yes there isnt much to be had out of our engine's without going FI.

I have just bought a Z4, 3.0L E85 for summer fun !!! also to modify and take over to germany in summer. Performance gain wise i love turbo for the power and whistle, superchargers are ok but the money and labour required to install them are nuts, i have always been a huge fan of Nitrous Oxide !!!! and im sticking a 50bhp shot on my Z over the next 2 weeks, just getting other bits sorted first such as the exhaust etc, but then the Nitrous will be installed, this in my opinion is hands down the best mod and pound for pound you can get !!! well providing your dont CONSTANTLY use the spray and empty bottles quicker than your petrol tank ! cost wise, checkout www.akamoto.co.uk you can get a full kit with all the bells and whistles for under £500 !!!http://www.akamoto.co.uk/nitrous-cars.asp
