Finally got round to fitting the new Performance Gearknob and Alcantara gaitor. First inpresions with gearchange is very good. Definatley better than with the standard gearknob. Also very happy with the look of it with the new Alcantara Gaitor.

wondering if the performance short shift will fit the 3.0si as it is listed for the e46 but not sure if the z gearbox is the same

As far as I know all gear lever shafts are the same size and it should fit. I can definetly say that gear change feels a lot better and more comfortable to the feel as well.

No modifications needed? I thought it would only fit 1/3-series. The shape of gaitor on Z4 is different from 1/3-series. It looks better than ZHP gearknob.

Gaitor was ordered from Topgaitors on e-bay who I must say are brilliant. I contacted them and asked If they would do me a specific one for the Z4 in black alcantara with silver stitching and they charged £13 delivered. I had to remove the leather original one from the plastic frame and just clip the new gaitor over the lugs of the plastic frame. Really easy to do. No mods needed for the gear knob. Just pull original one off and push new one in.
I also think that it looks better than the ZHp but thats only my opinion and everybody has differnt tastes.
One other thing I would like to add is that I ordered the Knob from e-bay from JCWparts which is actually Cooper Bmw in Chelmsford  and they send me a six speed one first so when I eventually got in touch with the guy who deals with the e-bay part he said that he would send a replacement 5 speed with a SAE in it to send the other one back. 10 days latter still no gearknob and he would not return calls  so I got in touch with BMW uk who actually got someone else from the dealership to talk to me and sort the problem out. Then sure enough 2 days latter I had what I ordered. So beware if they get your order wrong cause thier customer service stinks. Really I should have ordered directly from my local dealers cause it took lot longer to sort out in the end.

I only point this out quietly because the same typo occurs on the Corsa and Citroen Picasso owners websites, and we wouldn't want to appear in the same search page as them now would we - its gaiter chaps, not gaitor. :poke:

i was actually talking about the short shift mechanism that reduces the gear lever throw as opposed to just the knob
