Performance gearbox oil

I'm looking to change the transmission oil of my 2003 manual 3.0i, car is on 95K and gear change is bit slow and obstructive.

On my previous car, a toyota MR2 which I tracked, I used Red Line MT90 and was extremely impressed by the improvement in speed and feel.

Can anyone recommend a good performance gearbox oil for the Z4?

If I were to use Red Line again what is the recommended type? Quite a few to choose from!

Redline MTL worked very nicely for me.

Most (Opie Oils included) would recommend 50/50 mix of Redline MTL and Redline D4 ATF. Both are GL4 which is important for compatibility with certain metals. They come in 1 quart bottles which is near enough as dammit the same as a litre. You need one bottle of each.

Others on here have had good results with Millers TRX 75W-80. It is a fully synth GL5 fluid but compatible with GL4 so no worries reacting with yellow metals etc.
 
The ATF in the mix is only to reduce the thickness to help with cold shifting so far as I'm aware, not because it's better for wear. In my experience using 100% MTL as a daily throughout the Winter it never felt too stiff.

Feel free to make your own decision...
 
I like Castrol oils and so put Castrol Syntrans B75W (API GL-4, ZF TE-ML 11) in my gearbox just over a year ago. Quieter and much smoother changes. No complaints and will definitely use the same again. :thumbsup:

Correct. I just have 100% MTL in the E46 M3 at the moment and although it was an improvement initially it feels to have lost a bit of it's 'slickness' over time. Maybe that was a seasonal thing - not sure. All the guys over on M3Cutters are recommending the 50-50 mix with ATF.

I do find it a little odd why Redline don't just make a hybrid like that in the first place though if it seems to be the optimum solution. Maybe it's something specific to the E46 M3 transmission that it is well suited to.
