People with 19 inch alloys, I need your help!

As most of you know ive recently fitted X5 alloys to my Z4

Now the main negative that came up was about the extra weight of the alloys & how the unsprung weight of the alloys will effect the handling, braking etc
I wanted to see the extra weight difference so i used the bathroom scales to weigh the old 108s & the new X5 wheels to figure out the difference.
My results were:

The 108s (18x 8J & 8.5J) (225/40/18 & 255/35/18) were 23.4kg per front & 24.2kg per rear

and the X5 (19x 9J & 10J) (235/35/19 & 255/30/19) wheels were 25.4kg per front & 25.7kg per rear

Now the bit where I need your help! If anyone has their alloys off the car any time soon or gets bored on a weekend could you quickly weigh them for me & post them on here?
Remember not to let the neighbour see you doing this as they will probably think you have lost the plot!!

Any help would be greatly appriciated as id like to see what other 19s actualy weigh :D
Just please remember to give wheel type, size & tyres sizes with the weight just so we can compare

Cheers for your help

Mike

I have mine off in my garage, i can weight them for you this weekend....

Depends on tyre size too... so prob worth specifying that aswell.

cheers aquazi! I thought a few people would be running winter wheel at the moment so would hopefuly be able to help.

Yea good point ill edit the post :thumbsup:

I would have thought that they would only be a few Kg's heavier, Aluminium is pretty damn light so even though the look substantial the weight difference would not be that great.

Secondly there will be two functions to the increased weight one is the effect that it has at each corner and my gut says that this will be pretty low. Secondly the effect of the spinning wheel I.e. the gyroscopic effect, mass at the centre is easier to change direction than mass at the outer. As a quick guess, I would reckon that the outer mass for any wheel of the same diameter is going to be similar (apart from style 296 which seem paper thin).

I have just popped a set of csl replicas on the scales. These reps are the ones from prestige wheels. They are manufactured by a company called YSM and the best ones to get imo.

Front:

19x8.5
Tyres - michelin pilot sport 2 - 235 35 19 about half worn
Weight = 20.7kg

Rear:

19x9.5
Tyres - michelin pilot sport 2 - 265 35 19 just under half worn
Weight = 22.6kg

I guess for accurate comparisons we should be doing this without tyres but im not going to turn up at my tyre fitters with a set of bathroom scales....

cheers dondp!

yes weighing the the wheels by themselves would be more accurate, but a rough idea is all im after at the moment :D

Anyone else got their 19s sat in the garage & fancy weighing them??

Ok, weighted mine...

19x8.5 with 235/35 tyres 6-7mm tread: 22.7kg
19x9.5 with 265/30 full tread (covered 500 miles): 24.6kg

Not too accurate being bathroom scales as DONDP with thicker sidewall tyres is a whole kg lighter per wheel then mine :o :?

Cheers aquazi :D

Yea its amazing how much difference there is. Would be quite a good read if alot of people got on board i think
