Just logged on the my PC and found that I have had an unexpected paypal payment of £120 from someone called Andy Pickup with the notes saying Oct 17th Track day.

All very suspicious, however I checked my account and the money is there so confused .com, now you might ask what's that got to do with the Z forum??? Well I looked up Andy Pickup on Facebook and up comes a guy with a cover photo of him doing a track day in a BMW Z4!!!! so thinking he might be a member on here who can shed some line on it otherwise what's the best course of action.

I am a bit nervous of just hitting the refund button or starting a dialogue as it could be a scam as plenty going on at the moment (friend just had £1200 nicked via a Norton Security scam) any advise welcome.

Leave it there and see what happens. They will probably request a refund if it's been sent as a transaction, rather than friends and family payment.

If not, you're £120 up

Might contact the facebook guy and ask him if has doing a track day in Oct, hope its a genuine mistake which I can refund.

I see no danger in emailing the sender and asking for an explanation. Keeping something that's not intended for you may result in a nasty charge-back and rating ding later.

Also worth getting confirmation from PayPal in what to do.

Exactly, let PAYPAL do the legwork & communication.

Also, imagine you had paid someone incorrectly by mistake, ask yourself what you’d like that receiver to do.

Especially when track day comes and you find you are not signed up :x

Just a quick update, going to call PayPal Monday as I just get automated replies to my email, I have emailed the guy on Facebook but no reply, what I haven’t done until I speak with PayPal and it’s worth notin, is refund the money which is the simple answer.

Last year I got scammed and my card cloned, I bought and paid for something on eBay, goods arrived ok ( just a low cost iPhone cover) week later I got an email from them saying they were having a problem with PayPal, could I accept a refund and then pay them back to another account, could see no harm in it so they sent me the money back. I repaid them and within days I found my card had been cloned and several transactions appeared on my statement (tend to check regularly) from different parts of the world until card provider cottoned on, got a refund from the provider ok but they did say the ebay transaction was likely the cause although I don’t know what details they can get with a refund, so being cautious.

So will talk with them Monday, I will suggest sending the money direct to PayPal and they can sort it out, it a mine field out there, I was at a wedding party last night and a guy next to me said he had found a new card with a £10k limit appear on his internet statement and it was being heavily used till he stopped it, good friend although not computer savvy just lost £600 in a Norton Internet security scam, got an email from them offering 2 years for the price of one if they sign up straight away, fill out the form with card details but not the security secured code on the back and send off, we will call you back with security questions and ask for the code and you get extra year free, feel for him and his bank won’t cover it, his fault yes but as I said not very computer literate, be careful out there, lots of scum want your money!!

That’s my second rant of the day, am I turning into an grumpy old git!!!! Hope it’s the result of a wedding party hangover, never ever been a gin drinker but last time it was compulsory nearly.

As a suggestion for extra security
1) install 2 factor authentication on your phone
2) install the app, as this will alert u every time a transaction is made
3) always go through FS provider over any query
