Parking sensors

Hi guys,

On my Z4 I'm having problems with the parking sensors and wondered if someone could help pinpoint the cause

When go into reverse get a long beep and listening at the back of the car I find the following on the sensors..

Far left; can't hear any noises
Inner left; clicks constantly very loudly
Inner right; clicks occasionally and rather quietly
far right; can't hear any noises

Is it possible that it's got multiple dead sensors or could this be indicative of something else being amiss. Is there a way to check them without randomly ordering replacements to try?

Tried googling/searching but everyone talks about finding the odd one out that isn't clicking rather than anything like what I've got.

Also, the sensors have never worked while I've owned the car, just replaced the reversing fuse yesterday to get the reversing light working again and the long beep when going into reverse etc.

As far as I can work out the default setting for factory-fit sensors is for beeping that gets quicker as you get nearer to things.

But my current Z4 seems to have had them retro-fitted and is set up so they beep once when you select reverse, then beep quicker as you get nearer to things. (Factory setting is for a beep on selecting reverse to tell you they aren't working)!

So the "beep" when putting it into reverse seems to be a setting in the On Board Diagnostics, which is probably where you may find some answers to your issue.

An OBD lead and code reader looks like a good idea (will be getting one myself soon)!

Does your beep continue even if you're not in close proximity to anything? Mine beeps on Reverse selection, then continues to beep intermittently until it senses an object (whereby it will beep in shorter intervals until it flatlines).

So I could be in the middle of a field and it would be beeping every 5 seconds (give or take) - but not because it's sensing anything.

I guess just for the sake of it? And I'd rather it didn't. So I'm thinking either a faulty sensor, or some sort of re-programming required!

No, mine beep once on selecting reverse, then don't start beeping until I get within about a foot of something and beep faster the nearer I get. Mind you if I am doing a 3 point turn they will sometimes beep as I get near the kerb!

I am sure I read somewhere that the beep on selecting reverse is an optional setting (the default setting is that they don't do that). Sorry I don't know, but maybe the continuing beeping you get is also a setting.

But I am sure someone on here will know what all the setting options are.

Thanks for your response mate. I'll have a look, tempted to go for one of those Carly things... that'll let me have a mess around without fear of screwing it up...
