Paintshield

Got my Z4MC covered by Paintshield the day after picking up last year, masking taped the whole front end (took bloody hours to do) and drove from Ashford in Kent dealership to the Paintshield HQ in Grantham. I had my E46 M3 covered aswell but not as much and can say that it can be expensive, but after 8000 miles in the Z there are no stone chips or marks on the front bumper, bonnet, front wings or side skirts. What I had done cost over a grand, but if you want to keep the joy of ones life in immaculate condtion then it is definately the way to go. They can if you want do the whole car, extreme, but it is possible. The company are very helpful and if you want something done thats not on their system then they are able to make new templates and can say from experience that they do a fantastic job, without going anywhere near a stanely knife as everything is laser cut off the roll. Well recommended, unless the front end looks like its been shot blasted. If anyone wants any more info then give us a bell.

That's what I'm getting done in January, although they're coming to me to fit it as my usual fitter said they'd advised him not to do it as it was a 4.5 out of 5 difficulty. The M5 is a 2 out of 5!

They said the Z4MC was unusually complicated - although I have asked to have the leading edge of the rear haunches covered too - a la Caterham rear guards.

I looked into this when I did the facelift front end and based upon the costs decided against it.

My local specialist will respray the whole front for around £150 and I just had all the sills and sides done for a little over £100. In fact they sprayed an entire Jeep in 2 tone blue and silver combination for £600, so not something I'd do.

Incedentally mmm-five a company I spoke to said they stop applying it in Winter other than in their own or preheated workshops, as it's impossible to get a good stretch and fit in the cold. Worth asking about that.

Don't worry, it's being done indoors at a coachwork place that is doing the prep work beforehand

The reason I've not gone for resprays is that the moment it's resprayed I'd get another chip - just how long do you wait before you've got enough chips to require a respray. My M5 gets a couple of chips a day and I go round and touch them up. Next day there's another couple. I'd need a front-end respray every year. There's a day's labour plus paint in doing that properly, so £150 is a bargain as I was quoted over £350 for the bonnet & grille.

I'm also a lazy bugger, and anything I can do to save myself time & effort is worth it as far as I'm concerned :P

Sounds like solid logic. I guess since I have the guys put extra clear coat it seems more durable and I have access to good prices

Granted you can get your car resprayed for such a low price, but as mentioned previously by another you've only got to move 100 yards and you have stone chips so you will never have a car without chips on it and sod having to go and get it sprayed all the time. Besides, the guarantee with Paintshield is very good and I have never had any problems with peeling.
If anyone does intend on getting their Z done you are mad not to get it done in doors. The size of the sheet that covers the bonnet is in two pieces (if you opt to get the whole bonnet done) and is huge, having this or any other panel done outside will be a nightmare with all the dust and other objects blowing around and getting attached to the sheets.
At the end of the day it's down to the individual, but with me I intend on keeping the car for a long time and think it's more worthwhile to get it done.
