Not really…ultimately everything is possible ..the simple solution is a swap of wheel and associated electrics…the manual version is different to the auto one..plus the paddles on later ones post 2011 are unidirectional..earlier ones each paddle could change up or down
I upgraded my E89 steering wheel from the earlier type to the later type, took me ages to get one (new they are about £1k), have a look on eBay and then the big breakers, even Ebay Germany. Think I paid £150 for the steering wheel (after a wee bit of haggling) and then sent it to Royals to be recovered. It is just a simple swap over (after you disconnect the battery and leave it for 30mins). Did automatic e89s ever come without paddles? I though paddles were standard?

i think the op already has a wheel with paddles, but the wheel is looking very tired, so is looking to replace it. and non paddle wheels are cheaper than wheels with paddles, so wondering if he can fit his existing paddles to the new non paddled wheel to save a bit of cash...

What you want to do is possible on the E85. You had to drill holes on the metal casting (they are marked) of the wheel for the bolts which hold the paddles and then use the rear trims from a paddleshift steering wheel and then use the trims for any steering wheel for the front.
So in the hope that BMW did the same with the E89 then this will be possible and hopefully your trims for the rear of the steering wheel are good enough to use.

I mainly deal with E85 so I don't know all the details of the different styles of steering wheels on the E89 but from a very quick internet search I have found that the holes to drill are not marked on the later lci e89 steering wheels.

Hopefully with information above you may be able find the answers to some of your questions as I don't know the difference between the M-Sport steering wheels and non M-Sport so I may be off the mark with the advice.
