Paddle shifts on Steptronic

Well you learn something new each day. Our local dealer has one of the last few coupe's and nice it looks too.

Noticed it had an ///M sport steering wheel and a paddle shift set up on the steptronic box. I must have missed it as I did not even know BMW had done this on the Zed. The salesman too knew nothing about it, making a generic comment that it must be something on the later models.

Just curious about when this was introduced as a year back I went to a lot of trouble, researched and built the exact same functionality into mine and just lurv it.

I don't know when they started it, but I just assumed it was standard on all Steps. My early '06 build has them and I use them all the time. Still don't know why people say they are pointless.

I'd like one on mine, having tried it on a TT.

I thought I'd read on here it was post facelift or did I ask the stealer? :?

I have a facelift 06 2.5si and have them on mine - love them because it gives you that element of control over just a plain stock auto box. Yes, you have the up/down shifter on the leaver - but its not exactly comfortable to do. Plus i find its excellent way of increasing MPG by shifting up earlier then when the car would ordinarily do so - when you know its right to do so also! :)

That noise when you shift down just at the right time also - blurp!!!

Thanks for the answers guys - looks like it's something that came in at the time of the facelift and no doubt as an expensive option.

I echo the sentiments about using it. I find it at its best in sport mode when I can crack along, have more control over which gear and when and overcome the annoying habit in sport of it sitting at least a gear lower all the time than it needs to be once you get to speed.

TT's always in a gear higher than you want so you have to change down twice  (in Drive, anyway), still does appalling mpg.

The steering wheel paddles were added to the Steptronic box at facelift, when the SMG option was canned, and I believe they were standard on all Steptronics. Prior to facelift SMG got the paddles and Steptronic didn't.

Yep I think you have it. Dived into a facelift 2006 brochure and see they offered the paddles on all 2.5Si and 3.0Si making just the MFSW or M sport options.

Yes - I have  . At the time I did mine, he had discovered how to retrofit them and was making a big secret of his knowledge and selling them at ridiculous prices. A bit of research and some work with a multi meter and I had the OEM set up working just perfect without anything more than a new wheel and mounting boss :)

There's a full project write up on the board for anyone who wants to do this. I was just curious as had not seen it offered as an OEM fit on the Zed before
