Paddle Shift Function Mod

Hi All 8)

I rarely visit here anymore as many will know I sold my Z4 back in 2023. Some may remember me or recognise my name from my Sports Button Mod or DSC Mod (If not, check my started threads and you'll find them)

After a few requests and pleas over the last couple of years, I finally took a look at the PADDLE SHIFTERS (2 Pin version) to customise how they work. Apparently some are not happy with how they function from factory, both sides being PUSH away from driver to change DOWN, and PULL towards driver to change UP.

I've seen the odd post here and other places before about people wanting to change the function, they'd hoped swapping wires would do it, but that didn't work for them. The function in the 2 pin connector to car version (The paddles themselves had a 5 pin one side, 3 pin the other) is based on a resistive measurement between the 2 pins, hence why just swapping wires around doesn't really work - or it poss could with some messing around.

So, for those who have automatics with the paddles that connect using a 2 pin connector - I have the ideal mod coming up.

A PCB swap - which is easy and safe to do, 5-10mins, will allow you to *choose* what each paddle does for each direction.

As an example, you could have:

- LEFT Paddles, push or pull - both change DOWN a gear
- RIGHT Paddles, push or pull - both change UP a gear

OR vice versa. You will be able to set both push or pull actions independently on both sides.

Want the LEFT side to be PUSH = DOWN, PULL = UP and RIGHT side be PULL = DOWN and PUSH = UP (are you crazy!?) - then this mod can do it!

You can set the paddles in any configuration you want.

Anyone here interested?

I would set it to the industry standard shift pattern: Left paddle shift down on all functions, Right paddle shift up on all functions. That would match all of my other cars.

Ahh, nice, yes, that's pretty much exactly what everyone has asked me for so far!

Hey mate, I remember you well from your previous mods

Have a read here:

I then ended up making custom paddles:

Oooh, so you had the SMG/Steptronic paddles? Did you take any more pictures of the PCBs? I'm trying to distinguish the difference between them on PCBs themselves! The Auto ones seem much easier (or vice versa, I'm still not 100% sure which is which)

I really need to find pics of both pcbs, top and bottom of the set you have I think then I can make the custom mod for ALL versions!

I know nothing about the SMG paddles. [Ref]Zedebee[/ref] maybe able to help.

On a seperate note, if you are interested in making pcb's it might be a good idea for you to read this thread. Then work out how to redesign a pcb and move the chips over so that the a small pcb can be added onto the back of the stalk so it's an all in one unit:

I have pictures of the pcb for the Z4 cruise stalk to help making a pcb.

I've made a good number of custom electronic mods over the years, I've been designing my own PCBs for years! :)
Must've spent thousands using JLCPCB to fabricate them too ha - JLCPCB are awesome though.

I'll have a read of your thread and see if I can figure out what it is you need and what you mean
