Finish Photos on page2

Hi All, (Posted elsewhere but thought it was something of interest for here)

Finally....... got to doing a bit of correction the other night. And managed to have a go on the Z4.

Sorry the photos are so poor, I nearly didn't bother but i guess its my thoughts out loud.

Masked up rear 1/4 which had worst marks (Machining marks pretty bad) and good thickness.

Its been bothering me for a while now how bad some areas of the paint are considering it was 3 months old when i bought it. Photos before I wiped over with a quick detailer... Lesson 239 Learnt!

IMG_1100.jpg

I took readings getting around 170 to 150

IMG_1101.jpg

Then using Sonus Red Finishing Pad and Menzerna FF hit the panel once at speed 1, 6 passes (3 horizontal, 3 vertical) at speed 3 and 6 passes (as before) at speed 5. Finished off with 1 quick pass at speed 1.

IMG_1103.jpg

Cleaned and checked paint little to no correction but the readings were nearly the same.

Camera then died But i did another Hit Using Sonus White Polishing pad and Menzerna 3.02 and carried out another 1, 6, 6 and 1 passes. Much better corrections but not perfect. Readings only down a Micron or so if that.

Finally hit it with Sonus Yellow Restore Pad and Menzerna 3.02 same passes and found maybe 85% corrected on the bad machining marks and 95% on the rest of the pannel.

Looking at the photos the finish looks a little milky around the poor automatic flash but in the flesh with my new Brikmann and Halogen it looks spot on.

To be honest the readings still were similar but Ive ordered a laser pointer to beable to pin point the spot as suggested by other on here.

I can see this taking a bit of time but at least im happy that Menz 3.02 and Sonus White or Yellow Pads will do the job.

Sorry again for the Poor photos.

Cheers

Thanks for the write up... I really want to do something similar to mine, as my paint is in need of some TLC... Still haven't got round to purchasing a machine yet, and it's not like we have had any decent weather this year to make me want to do it either.

Looks a lot better  as nice as my car is it could do with a D Swirl but had no experience with a machine and spotting swirls outside on Silver paint is a nightmare may get it done by a pro next year

Nice job. I personally use with my PC Menz 3.02 with Edge yellow pad and then Menz FA with orange pad.

Stunning. Absolutely nothing will improve the finish on our Z4's more than doing the project with proper preparation.
If there was a practical way of setting up a Z4-forum detailing day in an area that has easy access to all in the UK what a fantastic event that would be. Link it up with a drive or banquet etc., and you have the potential for a once in a lifetime gathering. Something one of you peeps should give serious consideration to: learning experience and a great get together.

Thanks all,

Not got any further on the correction which is a shame as i thought i would be half way around by now. I did spend a bit of time... :o on Friday giving the Freelander a good going over by hand. and finishing it off yesterday...

Once the Z4 is done ill bring it out at fine weekends and just try and keep it swirl free.

Regarding meetings, I think summer meets are the best, the Boxster guys meet a fair bit which is nice, Im meeting a chap on the 5th Dec togo over paint correction on his Bmw.....

Update: lol

Well it may well go down as the longest ever correction but the finished job should be pretty good. And because im in no rush im thinking of seeing how far i can take the finished job too....

Ive completed the side now and thought the reflections was worth a few pics.

The front wing was interesting with as low as 78um readings lower to the panel. I ended up hitting most of the area with Menzerna 3.02 on a Sonius SFX-2 Pad but avoided the low areas and used 85RD instead.

To say i was happy with no damage to the clear coat is an understatement.

Anyway heres a few pics so far with no wax or real clean.

Im finding the 4 pea size blobs of polish better now so thats for the advice guys.

Only wised i had took photos during the wash and clay stage but time was an issue back then.

I noticed the flooring as well. It wouldn't do my garage any good as I plumbed in softened hot water for washing etc. My floor is graded so it flows onto the side of my driveway.

lol I almost hate to spoil it but its Lino....

It does look really good but i asked a bloke i know to get me the cheapest stuff to do the job and he had this.

Had painted it before but drying wet tyres and floor paint dont mix too well.

Its really getting there honest!

After moaning to the wife about the lack of time ive spent on the car she looked the other way when i spent 2 good sessions on it.

Sunday saw me getting the car out and rather than spend alot of time taping up every panel gap just see how much i could do.

After hitting the bonnet over xmas with the Sonus white polishing pad with Menzerna 3.02 and removing 98% of marks i did the same for the whole side.

Just boot and bumpers left which i should finish this friday then i can seal and put a few layers of wax on.

I know this is a long and drawn out correction but the confidence i have gained since that first panel.... with some great advice from some lads on here hopefully shows even people with little free time can get stuck in.

Just looking forward to see the finished car in the sunshine now....

Sorry, sorry i know its not even funny anymore! But Im nearly there......

Managed to fall out with Mrs N on valentines weekend enough to be banished from the house so i thought it would be rude not to crack on with the Z4's correction.

Looking at my masking up compared to the first post showed me ive moved on a bit. To be honest the Z4 is a mare to machine just due to the striking design and folds.

Anyway Taped

IMG_1266.jpg

Ive found i can just get away with Menzerna power finish 3.02 and Sonus SFX-2 White pad, which is good because the SFX-1 yellow pad is a little stiff.

Finished with the tape still on...

IMG_1267.jpg

I was rushing to finish and of all the finshed photos none look any good but i did manage to get a nice reflection off the boot!

IMG_1273.jpg

So there you go If i had a little more time and the battery hadn't gone flat through lack of use :wall: I would have finished the front bumper and said JD!

Edited: Managed to get the front bumper finished Monday night! Camera battery dead so phone camera had to do....

Hi,

Yeah its a good site, ive spent too much time and money on this lark over the past 12 months!

No need to buy products fron the states.... loads of good sellers here. My advice is Dodo Purple Haze its £30 ish but the tub is large and is great on dark colours.

Ive got to Seal, wax and finish mine off now! Got some Zaino Z8 to finish the job off

I have my garage carpeted. (really)

Fancy a free flight to Glasgow and all the coffee/tea/biscuits you can manage in exchange for a weekend of detailing my zm?

(Worth a try  )

I used to do alot of detailing...Lost the passion for it now. I don't mind doing mine or a pals...But arsed doing that as a job. Even at 350£ a detail....20hrs work...= £17.50£ SAC that! it's bloody hard work.
