Sods law, spent all afternoon hoovering out the inside of the car, cleaning the dash and sills, nourishing the leather and I even cleaned the pedals.

Did a quick diagnostic with the OBD2 reader and I seem to be getting a code of P16C0. From Googling I can only find one listing for this code on a BMW and it's in German:
P16C0 Eigendiagnose Motorsteuergerät - ESP-Überwachung - Kabelbaum, Motorsteuergerät (from this page)
Doing a babelfish on it (as meine deutsche ist nich sehr gut) I get this, (I kid ye not):
Eigendiagnose engine expensive equipment - ESP monitoring - wiring harness, engine expensive equipment
Engine Expensive Equipment - awesome, just what I wanted to hear!
