Overspray dissaster - help needed!

Hello all,

First post on the board and it's a depressing one.

I had set out to spray tint my side lights and had masked up the surrounding area and proceeded. Once I had finished and peeled away the news paper, it appears as though some parts of the paper had become over saturated and the spray tint seeped through on to the car. Furthermore, a gentle wind seems to have made the paint spread a layer over various parts of the bonnet. It's not really visible but feels like a thin layer of sand paper when I rub my hands over it and then smooth again where it missed the car, :headbang: . I've also got some straight lines which separate the over spray and normal paint where the masked area was removed. Looks awful.

I tried to clay bar the area and use auto finesse triple to polish by hand but bugger all happened. Any ideas on how I can remove this myself before having to take it to a shop? The spray tint is removable using white spirit but I don't think I should be throwing that onto the paint.

Bloody balls up not stopping when I noticed the wind. Really appreciate the help.

White spirit will be fine on your paint, I'd wash the car first so you aren't rubbing grit into the paint thought.
And then wash it again when you've finished...

The white spirit will likely strip any wax etc. so don't be surprised if the area looks a little dull afterwards, you'll just need to reapply your preferred wax/LSP

Thanks for the prompt responses. This happened yesterday evening and it's raining hard outside today so i'll have to wait a few days it seems.

Sorry for the stupid question, but how do I go about applying the spirit? Just saturate a microfiber with it and buff into the area?

Thanks for the help

Try and do as Ducklakeview said as soon as possible as the overspray will harden the longer you leave it,and will become harder to remove.

And then get some picture of your car, we like pictures :poke:

What side lights were you spraying ?

I'll do it when I get home. Hopefully there is a break in the rain. I'll take some pictures of the nightmare. I tinted the side repeaters on E89.

If it doesn't come out, is a machine polish with compound the only option?

They are so easy to remove as well, you should just have taken them out and done it somewhere away from the car. :(

The above were more helpful than the VW Audi Forum:

And the Ford Owners' Club:

As well as M3 cutters, which Z4M-2006 was presumably reading.

Just saying.

Good piece of research. Will be interesting to see how this is explained away ...
Well the post times were

10:07am - Z4 Forum
10:17am - VWAudi Forum
10:22am - Ford Owners Club

So, even if it's spam, it looks like we're #1 'coz he spammed us first... :spam:

Try gently buffing the overspray with wire wool liberally lubricated with some Nitromoors or similar paint stripper, diluted with oven cleaner. This may cure your problem.

We'de love to see the results on your BMW ST GTi so please do post some pics :voodoo:
