Ordered a M2 today....and yes the Z4M roadster stays also...!
My garage is going to be awesome and I can hardly beleive it :)
New school vs Old school....Coupe vs Roadster...Turbos vs NA....
M2 for daily traffic and some track.....Z4M for sun and fun and some track!

I have till the end of this month to decide between M-DCT (DKG) or manual transmission on my M2 order...
Difficult decision :o
I did a testdrive with a M-DCT and a testdrive with a manual M2 is in 2 weeks....for the moment I ordered one with M-DCT (but I can still change it).

I have done the very same!! Put a deposit on an M2 a few weeks ago - the Z4MC will have to go which I am still a little uneasy about as its such an amazing car. I have ordered DCT but have a while to decide and am pretty sure I am going to change to manual. It will only do a few thousand miles a year so think its the best option for me. Really liked the DCT I test drove and would definitely go down that route if it was a daily - been a real debate going on in my head!!! What colour have you gone for?

M2 is going to be my daily and in time it will also see some track...maybe more track then my Z4M...who knows? Whenever the sun is out I will still take the Z4M and I wil keep it in my garage as a more oldschool car. I was thinking M-DCT on the M2...so the difference between my manual NA Z4M is even bigger with the M2. In my mind I was thinking; when you have two car's its nice to have two totaly different cars... For the moment I ordered a black one with M-DCT...but maybe I'm changing it for a grey one with manual gearbox.

If I was buying a brand new car then no way I would pick manual. I would also go overkill on the service of the transmission and replace the filter and fluid every 4 years (rather than the recommended 8 by the manufacturer). Fluid only costs about £50 anyway for decent stuff by castrol, etc.

I feel with a manual you have to be very careful when pushing the car whereas with an auto you don't need to think about anything apart from accelerating or braking. Every car I've had up until now has been a manual and now after driving an auto I'm wondering why every car isn't an auto tbh. Especially if it is your daily drive.

F1 cars are also automatic aren't they? Going up the way anyway, I think manual when downshifting.

F1 car's have steering wheel paddles for both upshift and downshift. They just rev so fast that you don't.really notice them pulling the paddles

I would go for the dct if it's your daily. It's the future. Manual will be confined to the history books very soon.

An F1 has a totally different gearbox than can be found in any car (except other race cars, like rallycars).
They mostly resemble a bike gearbox. So its a gearbox with a shift drum afaik. (obviously computer controlled).
It is not a dual clutch box or a box with a torque converter. It has a dry clutch, but it can shift clutchless (dogbox)

DCT All the way !!!!

Ive got my 35is & love it.can`t see past the DCT.I had a M4 demo car last month with manuel box, great car but really missed the refindment of the DCT. Got M4 vert this week with DCT & IMO makes the car so much more fun. I use the paddles almost all the time as i do in my zed. As you say it`s a daily even more reason DCT

If you're keeping the Z (which I assume is manual) then ordering a daily such as the M2 with DCT is a no brainer!

Enjoy - I'm very jealous!

Good luck with that idea - maybe you need to look at the price differential between an E46 M3 manual compared to an SMG flappy for an indication of the future in terms of desirability!

At the end of the day you aren't buying an F1 car!

I agree with this, however the M2 will possibly be the last of the breed so I think I would want one with the traditional three pedal manual and let's face it pretty much all performance cars now are either DCT or Auto so it's nice to be different I think.

I would lean towards the DCT, it can be as agressive or comfortable as you need. Good for a hoon with optimised performance or smooth economic shifts for a rainy wintry commute.

I guess it all depends if you're buying the car with the intent of keeping it long-term or you're getting it on a PCP-type deal and intending to hand it back after 3/4 years.

If you're buying it as a 'keeper' then, as others have indicated, the manual version will likely be worth more in the future as it'll be rarer. If it's a PCP-deal and it's going to be a DD, I'd go with the DCT

Why is everyone obsessed with resale value? The guy is asking for opinions on what would be best for a daily driver. He's not asking what will be worth more in 30 years if he keeps it locked up under a sheet whilst only doing 2000 miles in it.

I'm buying the M2 for me and for me to enjoy at this moment! To be honest; I have zero interest in future value. If that was my concern I would not drive my Z4M on the Nurburgring that much and that hard like I do :) That's not good for the future value ;) It's my car, not the next owners car....a manual will be in higher demand in the future, that is 100% true...especially because most M2's are ordered with M-DCT.

I tend to keep my cars for a very long time (I never lease my cars). The M2 replaces my daily e46 325i that has been my daily car for 11 years. My Z4M is with me for 6 years (and is here to stay). So future value is not really my concern....and maybe the M2 is also a keeper. Don't know at this time if it is also a keeper...but it will be my daily for at least 5 years...so I need to be sure to choose the correct gearbox for this long period or for even longer.

If the M2 was my only car it would be a manual...but at this time I will also have my manual and more oldschool Z4M sitting in my garage waiting for the sun to come out. In 2 weeks I'm going to drive a manual M2 + a M-DCT on the same day and hopefully I can make a decision at that moment... I know; it is a luxury problem ;)

+ 1 ;)
I also don't understand why nowadays everyone is obsessed by future value. In the past people bought the cars they wanted to drive at that moment and they did not care about future value or who is going to buy it after their ownership. You can see in my post above...that is me also :)

The M2 will start as a 100% daily driver (it replaces my daily driver 325i)....but in time the M2 will probably evolve into daily driver & track and my Z4M will see less track time. The OEM suspension and OEM brakes (with BMW performance pads) are realy, realy good for street & track.... The OEM M2 suspension feels as good as the PSS-10 on my Z4M. The M2 brakes are not the equally good as the AP's on my Z4M, but it's getting close and they are way better then the standard brakes from the 1M and e92 M3.

I don't think you can advise someone to go manual or auto as its personal preference, for me manual all the way, your driving the car as opposed to it driving you, just my take on it and should you keep it outside of warranty and not renew it the autos a ticking timebomb and frightenly expensive to repair.

Tim.

It's very simple:
If you're the kind of guy that thinks in traffic: oh no... I have to shift... AGAIN! jeez.... then any form of automatic is the way to go.
If not: manual

In 10 years time you see these kinds of topics with self steering/driving cars

Completely this, I've test drove both a DCT M4 and DCT E92 M3 and I purchased a manual E92 M3 instead and if I was to buy a M4 I would go for the manual too, the DCT is a very accomplished gearbox for sure but involving it is not and if you want the full package you need three pedals :driving:

How did the M4 Vert compare to the 35is in performance?
