Orange peel

Why can't BMW paint a car properly?

I'm going to get my car detailed next year, but to remove all the orange peel and give a proper mirror finish will be around £1,500. It also leaves the clear coat so thin that you can't have it machine polished again. So a no go.

Has anyone had either a normal detail (£500 range) or an extended one to get rid of the orange peel? I guess if you talk silly money then our have a further layer of lacquer painted on by someone who can paint.

Pointless rant really, but there you go.

As an aside, has anyone thought about removing the badges/indicators on the wings and filling the hole so it's smooth? I'd love to see a profile photoshopped to have a normal indicator in the mirror instead. Not something I'm going to do, but I'm interested in the theory.

Removing badges has been done loads of times. Removing the indicator though, don't think it would look right, it's quite a design feature. You might also struggle mot time without the side repeater.

Mick is correct....

Clear coat when wet sanded can remove about 7-10 microns..not that much..

But I would use a denim pad, it's equivalent to 2000 grade paper but goes to haze the paint..

It does need a pro to do it though, it's not really DIYable unless you have plenty of experience with a rotary

Not sure where you are but Matt at obsidian detailing is the man...he is in Saddleworth
