Optimal launch rpm and optimal gear change rpm 3.0L

Hi guys,

Just wondered when doing a fast launch to achieve the acclaimed 0-60 what revs you you hold the bite at ready to lay off the clutch.

And.... what the standard torque curve reveals in terms of the rpm to shift up at, in each gear to achieve maximum pull before the the torque drops?

I seem to hold on to the max rpm for each gear and I know in theory I would be better shifting up before then!

On cold tyres moreless 1800-2000 rpm is quite alright
When tyres are warmed up you can try around 2500rpm, but still no point of trying to use max torque while starting.
Probably will have to verify that experience, as I have recently installed an LSD

feels like a pretty flat torque curve to me, i never redline the motor.
shifting at 5k or so is plenty fast enough for kicks-dont think thrashing it would reap any benefits.

Not sure about the pre-facelift, torque curve on the 3.0Si is pretty flat from about 2,500 to 6,500 rpm IIRC. There's a pic on here somewhere of it. When 'on it' I used to take it pretty much to the red line, but under normal driving conditions smartbear is quite right, 5k is fine. Weirdly, the same is true in my new car, though the noise goads you on to take it up to 7/8k whenever you get an opportunity :driving: :driving:

I've launched at 3k rpm and it grips well, anything below and it can start to feel like it's bogging down.

On an n/a car, the most power is available just before the redline, so holding it in gear until then is optimal and will reap the biggest reward.

Sounds bloody awesome too.

Hmm, not to sure about that Ben-don't forget it's not horsepower that forces you back into the seat, its torque & max torque is always below max horsepower (usually by about 2k revs) which itself is always below the redline.

The guys not on about it feeling quick though, he's asking for the best 0-60 time.

Using all the availablw horsepower will give you the best 0-60 on an n/a.

On a turbo car, it'd be different.

Smart bear, horsepower is a product of torque and revs. Just because the torque curve is reducing doesn't mean the power is reducing, and certainly doesn't mean it'stime to change gear!

Quite a few variables mainly available grip but 3-3.5k and swiftly engage the clutch (if you have a delay valve this will smell a bit!) then shift just before redline.
