Opening the Roof while driving at 20mph

Quick question:

- Do pre 2013 cars allow the roof to open and close while driving at 20 mph or is it just 2013 cars? If you drive over 20mph operating the roof controls (Up or down) the display goes red so you have to balance your speed below 20mph.

The change was made sometime in 2012, cant remember when, but my 1st car was built early 2012 (took delivery 31 March) and didn't have it, then the replacement was built later (took delivery 5 October) and it does have it.

Only tried it once and I went over the speed during the operation and the roof just stopped until I slowed down.

I think it was cars build after march 2012 and iirc it's 26mph which I think is 40kph - I typically stick cruise on at 26 if doing it in a 30 zone due to it starting to rain or anything :)

Mine has a build date of Aug 2012 and according to the manual, the roof can be operated at speeds up to 25 MPH. I bought it on the 1st of March and have only had the roof down once on that day so I can't confirm if its works

Whatever the speed you can open and close the roof... just make sure you do it on the smoothest of roads and not in windy weather. Its not going to be pretty otherwise :)

This is what actually puts me off using it, cos I can just see that going over a pot hole with roof in mid flight will bugger it right up.

At just over 20mph the roof stops operating mid up or down. Both warning lights come on the dash and in red on the iDrive. But its good that you can put the roof up or down while driving as you down have to park up.

I think the only real use for it is if you start to move the roof whilst at traffic lights etc, then need to pull away before the operation is completed, otherwise you'll pee everyone off sat still finishing the roof, or look a twat driving off with the roof stuck.

Also, its not really ideal, cos you've got to keep the button pressed, which is, in my opinion possibly dangerous, or at least inconvenient.

I dont get why it just stops if you go over the speed. Surely, if you go too fast, its going to act like an air brake. So, assuming the boot was in the upright position and you go over the limit, it will stop....in its most airbrake position! It would be better to decide to close etc if you go over the limit.

Obviously, if you have the smart top module then you dont have to keep pressing the button, so it is more convenient, but generally I think it best to avoid operating while moving if possible due to the risk of buckling the mechanism by hitting a pot hole etc. Plus, if you have the smart top module then you can open the roof whilst getting in the car, and close it whilst getting out---currently I have to wait for the roof to stop moving before opening the door etc....
