I have just inadvertantly deployed the drivers airbag on my beloved Z4 and I am trying to weigh up my options. I had been having issues with error codes that wouldn't clear:
  • 0095AB SBSR Control Unit Fault (which I believe could be bing caused by the one below)
  • 0098D3 SBSR Short Circuit, firing circuit, front airbag, right (E85), or passenger airbag (E6x), stage 2, to ground
I decided to remove the passengers airbag module and take a look/clean the connectors using contact cleaner. I unbolted the drivers seat and moved it forward a little to give me more space to get to the module. I then removed the battery negative lead and unbolted the passengers airbag module, removed the connectors and set about inspecting the pins which were squeeky clean, I sprayed the connector itself with contact cleaner. I then reconnected the passengers airbag module but decided not to bolt it back in in case I couldn't clear the codes. I reconnected the battery plugged in ISTA+, turned on the ignition and I had an additional code SBSR under voltage. Figuring the vehicle battery was low I hooked up a charger and then proceeded to "delete" fault codes usign ISTA +. As soon as I clicked the delete button, the drivers airgbag deployed. I have cleared codes many times on numerous vehicles with ISTA + without issue so this came as quite a shock.

So I now need to decide where to go next, I love the car but need to weigh up the potential cost to get it fixed vs how much I could get for the car as it stands, hence the post.

It is going to need a new steering wheel airbag and passengers airbag module and the front offside wheel is binding as it has been off the road for 9 months. Other than that the car is in really good condition. I aquired it in December 2016 with 25000 on the clock, the previous owner had owned it for 9 years and done 9000 miles in that time, the rest of the time it had been garaged (I'm the third owner). In the time I have owned it, I haven't done a lot of miles and it has only been used on journeys >20 miles. The oil has been changed regularly, typically <5000 miles or 2 years.

I am interested to know if anyone would be interested in it and what they would be prepared to pay. Please PM me if interested. I am happy to post some pictures but I need a few days to get over the shock and try to restore sound to my left ear.

What engine is the car? That will have a big bearing

I have stacks of airbags if you need some

Have you disconnected the fired airbags? Electric matches tend to go short circuit after they've fired which would give that error.

And, as someone who has been blasé about airbags not going off unless there's a damn good reason and whose sat in the driver's side many a time clearing airbag faults, I can only think that there's something very wrong with the airbag system on this car.

Someone once told me that if you doing any work on the SRS system when you come to turn the key for the first time do if from outside the car though the drivers window.

I would suspect the main issue was starting without the module in place. This should be fixable and will be a good car for someone if the op decides not to keep it.

There are car details in his signature assuming that is the car?

Z4 3.0L 2005. Titan Silver. Audio Upgrade Second Stereo Pioneer X8700DAB, Sony Xplode 4 x 70W Amp, 6.5" Reckhorn Subs in rear cubby, Focal AS165-3 in fronts.

But he needs to state a price I believe.

Very sorry to read of your plight, but forum rules do require you to state a price.

It sounds like a low mileage example so why not just pick a number and be willing to haggle if necessary?
