Here's a partial teaser pic I received from the gent detailing my Zed.

Last Sunday, I drove my little coupe a bit north to have her fully paint corrected. Goodbye scratches and swirls, and hello Jet Black shine. I'd been looking for a top-notch detailer capable of tackling BMW's infamously "soft" Jet Black, and found one through autopia.org. It's been a long week without my wheels, and I can't wait to pick her up this Sunday.

I'm sure there'll be a complete writeup once its finished... and I'll be sure to share the link. In the meantime, here's a peek.

Oh, I also had the windows tinted (35%) as part of the detail.

And for you Z3 M Coupe fans, the detailer, DJ (aka "Got_Leather" on autopia.org) recently did a marvelous paint correction on a Laguna Blue stunner... enjoy the show!

It took about a month for the detailer to post the process pics from the detail (link below)... they really don't do the end result justice. The Zed looked like it had been sculpted of black glass. Naturally, the day I picked it up it rained and sleeted the whole drive back. :x

Of course a Jet Black car is a labor of love, and it's a trick to keep up with the shine. The real point in the full paint correction detail was to get rid of a wealth of scratches, holograms and surface swirls, and give her that factory fresh feel once again. With this out of the way, future light polishing will be more a regular maintenance routine.

Hi,

Looks great but FYI Bmw paint is pretty hard, Swirls will still turn up easily but hand polishing is completely ruled out.

I have a Jet Black Z4 and corrected it recently, the polishes normally used to correct slight swirls on other paints did even touch it!

End result was well worth it though.



Bet you'll love it when its finished.......... btw it will be better than new as the dealers haven't been near it lol

There's bloke in my street at a Laguna M3 that i've never seen clean. Shame he doesn't know what he has. I love the z3m, used to hav a estoril blue one, great cars but for the Vanos issues (S50).

Does anyone know of a detailer in Scotland/very north England as my car's paint is rubbish and badly in need of tlc? (and Ali won't come down from Aberdeen to do it for me :wink: )

Oh and Rollinstone, i can't believe you collected your Z in the rain! I wouldn't let a drop of it hit my newly detailed car!

Admittedly, I was just restating what was mentioned many times by various detailer on various sites. Many talk about certains paints and finish coats as being "soft" or "hard." I assume this means the ease with which different coulours from different manufacturers take damage or the challenge in repairing them.

In the case of Jet Black, it could simply be very difficult to get a perfectly even and swirl-free finish... And the fact that it is a color that is notorious for showing off every scratch or imperfection. My problem with black is that I love it on cars. This is my 3rd black car in a row (almost), and even though I swear them off every time, I see one and fall in love with it.

Sorry if I misspoke by misappropriating a term I misunderstood in the first place.
