One hour gyrocopter flight

My wife bought me a one hour gyrocopter flight from Chris Jones in the lakes. I have always been fascinated with this form of flight and can not wait for my spin around the lakes.

Has anyone else been up up and away in an autogyro?

What a great present, but I wonder why she didn't pay for you to fly in this gyrocopter?

Nope, but has always fascinated me too. The widest flight envelope of any flying machine I believe. If I was minted I would get once of these. 8)

I got a flight for my 30th I think it was. We went around Perthshire. My sister who bought me the flight ended up hiring another and we both flew about in a pair which was cool as the pilots played a bit trying to outdo each other a bit.

You will love it.

Fantastic! I remember first seeing one as a kid piloted by Bond in 'You only live twice' and really fancy a go. I used to fly microlights which are basically a seating tub and Rotax motor hung under a fabric wing so probably less stable and safe than a gyro'. But however confident you are in the pilot and machine I bet there's a little bit of wee when the climb kicks in. Enjoy

That is a seriously cool piece of kit, bet it's got a hefty price tag though.

I went up in one a few years ago and it was great fun. A guy through my work has one, he's an ex Tornado pilot so he had great pleasure in throwing it around. It's amazing how quickly they can climb, a cross between a helicopter and a plane.
Flying a few meters off of Elgin beach did feel like being in a bond movie!
Big grin afterwards.
:)

Never understand how they keep up there with the main rotor "NOT" being powered.
Wouldn't get me up in one, not even a helicopter.
Anything without wings shouldn't be up there.

Safer than a single engine plane. has a wider flight envelope so easier to land if the engine fails

Cheers guys. We took MiL to Sharrow Bay for afternoon tea yesterday, an early mothersday thing. The lake district looked amazing with snow covered hills. It is tempting to dig out the biking gear and get up there sooner rather than later.

A 20% share in a gyrocopter is about £9k, so it's not impossible to get flying.

There are still costs on top of the up front share, typically £50 monthly hanger fees plus £70 per hour to use it, but agree it's cheap compared to helicopter.

I went up in a Gyrocopter at an airshow in Montabaur a few years ago - I loved every minute and still grin when I think of the flight even tho the pilots english was only as good as my german!
The last member of my family to fly in that area was my late uncle circa 44/45 in LV 937 - I didn't mention that to the pilot!

LV 937 sounds interesting?

LV937: Flew with 578 until April1944 as LK-X & LK-R. It was then transferred to 51 squadron where it completed at least 100 sorties. As MH-E it became known as "Expensive Babe". LV937 suffered a tail wheel collapse when it was bounced on landing at High Ercall on 1st July 1945. The veteran bomber was struck off charge and scrapped three weeks later.

I don't know if it was my old unc who bounced it prior to being soc - but I do have photos of him with his "Expensive Babe" after completing her 100th - He had 72 in his log book .

And not forgetting the £6k to get your PPL(G) licence. But you will have to think how to spend the loose change that.

That sounds fascinating, but excuse my ignorance what make of bomber was that?

Funnily enough, High Ercall is very close to where I live on the Cheshire Shropshire borders. Not much of it is left now. A couple of hangers are used for agricultural storage and a haulage company is based there, but much of the airfield has long since been reclaimed for agriculture.
