I actually prefer the 17-55mm 2.8 IS to the 24-105 and the 24-70. Very hard getting a 24-70 MKI that isnt soft and they are all way over priced and the 24-105 is too slow.
Obv needed one for full frame tho so got the 24-105 because it is easy to find sharp copies, better focal length and is cheaper.

The 40D is an old camera now came out 2006/7 I think. The 7D is now the equivalent to it (50D, 60D, 7D) although the 60D is a very good cheaper alternative, it has an articulating screen. But the build quality is generally plastic instead of magnesium. But if you aren't worried about getting it wet then I would get that and save £200.
Yes all your lenses will fit, any EF lens as the original 10D didnt take EF-s lenses so you should be fine
But with EF lenses were designed for a 35mm size film or 'full frame' digital sensors. The APC sized sensors in the XXD and 7D you have to multiply the focal length by 1.6 for the crop factor so if you have a 24-105mm it will be 38mm at its widest and 168mm at its longest so more a medium telephoto than a wide to medium. Would get it with the 15-85mm EF-s lens kit good range and really wide.
EF-s lenses are more true focal lengths to APC sensors, but to get a good idea if you are used to full frame ranges you can times the EF-s focal lengths by 1.6 to convert. So the 15-85 is equivalent to 24-136mm.
