I changed from Mobil 1 to the Petronas equivalent and not only is it a lot cheaper, it also seems to last longer before my low oil light comes on.

Not sure leaving topping up til the warning light comes on is ideal ben. i'd suggest at least a weekly check and top up if required....

It only comes on as I believe my ccv to be blocked, causing excessive oil consumption. Runs like a dream otherwise.

I dunno mate. I'd still be tempted to suggest a quick 2 minute check under the bonnet would be more benficial than running your engine near to oil-starvation. I assume you keep a top up bottle in the boot when you're out and about burning up the streets?
Changed my CCV recently as it had failed. Was drinking a bit of oil before but now hasn't touched a drop since. Like a born-again alcloholic!

I use these guys as they are on my doorstep. They sell 100's if not 1000's of litres every day to all the local factories including Cummins engines. 5 litres of Shell Helix Ultra 5w30 is £35 or their own brand equivalent is £26.

What guys are these? :?

I did have a litre stored in my boot until a mate at work with a 320i had oil issues :lol: fortunately my work commute is 15 minutes (10 miles) each way so I barely do more than 150 miles a week all in

As long as its fully Synthetic and changed once a year or every 10k miles you can't go wrong. I agree with others that BMW's recommended service intervals are too long, particularly if we are considering cars over 8 years old and with high miles.

Cheers for all the advice guys! In the end I had 8 litres of petronas syntium 5000 5w-30 and filter for £40.66 delivered from carparts4less.Co.uk happy bunny!

In 99% of non ///M cars virtually any 5w 30 grade oil will be ok but no matter what manufacturer i would always change every 6-8k or 12 months (whichever came around first )
Look up Millers oils , its my preferred & will do all & more for the majority of Zs

It says non-M engines can use 0-30, 0-40, 5-30, 5-40 in LL01 or LL04 spec, quote "If BMW longlife (LL) oils are used, it is not necessary to keep a check on the viscosity grade"

so you pays your money .... I confess I tend to over-specify oil, fuels, parts etc so use the higher spec BMW recommend eg (Castrol) of LL04-5w40 but accept any of the recommended options are fine. For N52 owners with chattering lifters at start-up there is a theory that trying different oil grades can assist.
