Hi all,

My oil light came on when i turned the ignition off last night. So i think i need to add a litre of oil.

Just want to make sure i buy the right stuff...

Going to Castrol edge's website, i enter in my reg and it recommends Castrol Edge 0w-30. However it also lists my engine as an M54, though I've got a facelift (2007) 2.5i sport which as far as I know is the N52 engine. Double checking via model search on the same site, i've noted they don't have an option to select an N52 2.5i.

So... is 0w-30 the right stuff? or do i need something different?

I put 5w -30 in my N52.... Have done so for the last 3+ years.

Got mobil 1 at first, but now switched to castrol as it was cheaper.

As you are only doing a top up and 1L i would go to Bmw for a bottle to ensure its the same as what they used when it was serviced (presuming they did the last service)

Properly confused now. Was in Halfords, drove there in my other car, but when I got there I couldnt remember whether my manual said I needed oil that was bmw longlife 04 or longlife 01.
Halfords' handy guide pointd me in the direction of halfords bmw 5w-30 or mobil1 0w-40. The former said it was compatible with ll04, the latter said ll01. I then looked at castrol, which had no instore guide, but their website pointed me towards castrol edge 0w-30, compatible with ll04. As 2 out of the 3 recommendations stated ll04, and castrol was cheaper and I didnt want to use halfords own oil, I bought the castrol.
I get home, check the manual, and it says i need longlife 01, not 04. I then think I've bought the wrong stuff, but a quick google implies that ll04 is for the eu market, whilst ll01 is for the us market.
I honestly have no idea what to do. I'm scared of topping up with the wrong oil, but cant drive the zed until it's sorted. any advice? I dont know where my car was last serviced as I've not got the service receipts (was done before I bought it) though come to think of it maybe the service stamp in the service book should help - maybe I'll have a look and phone them tomorrow.
in the mean time, any thoughts on the ll01 vs ll04 issue etc?

You have nothing to worry about when you're only topping up. It's not like it's completely wrong and you're changing the lot.
 
Well looks like it should be ok, and as you say it's only a top up. have taken the plunge and it's now in the car. If it explodes I'll keep you all posted. ..

Is that true?-I suppose if you kept using the 'wrong oil' to top up(depending how often you top up) you would have a bigger ratio of wrong oil :cry:

Yeah that's true, but as a one off he will be fine but in the meantime I'd find out what oil the car has in it so next time he knows.

What you need is an oil that meets BMWs 'LL-04' standard, which is what the N52 engine requires. I recently got one of these for a top up:
