How on earth can you reach the sump from the fill hole... isn't, you know, the engine in the way?! I'd love to be proven wrong though.

I've been using something identical to this on my other cars

It works really well and one advantage is that you can pump directly from sump to container. No decanting from pump into container.

However, with no dipstick hole to poke the suction pipe down, I don't see how I can use it on mine. Might be back to the old fashioned way, crawling under the car for me

If anyone finds a decent and reliable way to use a pump on the N52 I'd love to know.

Still a bit dubious about these although accept garages have been doing it this way for a long time but mainly it saves them time and therefore increases profits. The sump plug is magnetic and therefore attracts any minute particles which you wipe clean but obviously cannot do this with the suction method. Also oil at the bottom of the sump can become a bit thicker particularly on higher mileage worn engines or if oil changes are less frequent. When you warm the engine and undo the sump plug the flow of oil coming out is meant to bring this thicker oil out as well. Conversely, the diameter of the vacuum pump is much smaller than the sump plug and flow up the pipe will not be equivalant to flow out of the sump.
However you pay your money and take your choice. I find getting are armful of warm oil rather enjoyable.

I don't have a dip stick but use it all the time. Just goes down the fill hole!

Surely the tube doesn’t reach down to the sump via the filler cap, does it?

I can’t see how you could easily find a path down into the sump tbh.

Could be possible but I doubt it as internal oilway into sump is unlikely to be immediately below filler plug.

Just remember to keep filler and filter cap in place for a good vacuum and you'll get every last drop

I only use the pump for interim oil changes really. It goes into the indi when it’s ‘service is due’ so he can do it the conventional way, along with anything else that needs addressing.
