Oil usage

I just bough tme 2005 Z4 3.0I (22000 miles) around three weeks ago. I chekced the oil level within the first day or so of ownership and it was full. I have added around 1000 miles since I bought the car, I checked the oil level last night and it is down 1 quart. Is this normal? Seems excessive to me, I haven't owned anything since my 1967 Chevy Impala that burned oil. I love the car otherwise, just wondering if I should take it in to the dealer for this?

Sounds excessive to me. I've gone almost 12K on original oil and I'm down less than half a quart.

Do you have the electronic oil check or a dipstick? Was it up to operational temp or not?

Don't know about electronic oil check, is this something I should check for? I just pulled out the dipstick. The engine was still warm, although it had been sitting for an hour or so. I believe that when I checked it the first time the engine was completely cold.

BTW, thanks Smokin for the reply. I'm just trying to determine if this is normal, I'm guessing that it is not...

Not sure on Z4s but on my old 535d (2005) you had to check the oil when the engine was hot not cold. :driving:

Thanks everyone! I checked again tonight with the engine fully warmed up and it is one quart low. I'm know that I checked it when I brought it home from the dealer but I am willing to admit that maybe I didn't look very close and maybe it was already low. I'll give the service department a call tomorrow.

I think you will find they say it is normal

Yep I agree, BMW/dealer will probably tell you 1 quart in 1K miles is considered normal :fuelfire: . Depending on how the previous owner drove the car and broke-in the motor there maybe more seating of the rings that will reduce the oil consumption. Now as a owner, its annoying and expensive, at 1 quart per 1K miles, if you follow the suggested oil change (every 15K miles) you would have added 15 quarts of oil, equalling 2 oil changes and spent over $100 for oil between scheduled oil changes :x .

Since you just got the car i'm sure your having fun and driving it hard, If your revving the motor up around the rev-limiter often :driving: you may see a higher usage. I change oil every 15K miles and add about 1 quart.

Z44M3, my 2005 3.0 used to drink a fair bit of oil too so I'm sure yours doesn't have any problems.

You just need to make sure that you're checking the oil consistently, always warm or always cold.
