Oil Usage

Since getting my 2.3 a month ago (approx 1000 miles ago) it has gone from almost "max" to "min" on the oil gauge. Is this normal? I know a few people who have had six pot BMs and have not used anywhere like as much.

Breaker, thanks. Did anything else change, fuel consumption, responsiveness etc?

Anyone else had the same experience with oil?

Hmm at 20000 it shouldn't be using an awful lot. Up to the first 8000 miles mine used a fair bit, but since then its not used any.

I've had mine since new, and it now has 68,000 miles on it, it has used just over 1.0 litre of oil in that time. If you are using 1.0 litre of oil every 1000 miles I would guess that isn't right.

But then again I have looked after my cold engine of which someone else should reap the benefits of.

Dick Lovett Bristol say a litre of oil per 1000km is normal but will take a look. Think I'll run it for another month and see how it goes.

I have a 30i auto and my oil has always been on max whenever I have checked. I got it last Sep on 5k miles and it has just passed 13k. It has had a service so I assume they changed/topped it up then.

You have reminded me I should check it again as haven't done so for a while.

Edit just checked and still on max. Does it ever go below?

I wouldn't worry, the car will let you know when its low, and typically, though the car asks for a litre to be put in, only a half litre is required. A tip from my local BMW dealer.

Maniac Loving your picture, reminds me of a great day out every time I see it, I was some near the front of you and one of the lucky ones who got a good blast on an empty track, before they stopped the fun, certainly the fastest parade lap I've ever done

i traded in my sdrive 23i at 23,000 miles and the only top up i had to do was half a litre at about 10,000 miles.

BMW have produced a "What to tell the customer" leaflet for their service departments! (re oil usage)

If you are on good terms with your agent - ask for a copy. It spells it out chapter and verse.
