Oil temp gauge

Hi all

Now I have the supercharger running, I want to add an oil temp gauge.

Has anyone fitted one, have any recommendations etc?

Stu

I have one of these - shows oil temp straight from the OBD port and you can actually wedge it in between the two main "clocks"

If you play this video from 4:26 you can see it reading 123ºC https://youtu.be/R6oin4zmtKU?t=266

Hi Liam. I quite like the look of this. Wanted some extra gauges myself now I have fitted my supercharger and this might be just the ticket for monitoring oil pressure and temp, boost etc. What sort of size is it and have you any photos of it ? How accurate do you think it is ?

I watched the video and at around 5:36 the light changes and you can see it quite clearly

The Amazon link above has the dimensions (and lots of photos). The Z4 has no oil pressure gauge so you'll have oil temp only.

Disclaimer: I've only tried this on my 2007 E86 (N52) and cannot confirm if it'll work with other engines.

Yeah, not sure at what point (model year) OBD2 started broadcasting data. I have a Carista app that supposedly reads from the OBD2 port and displays engine info on the app, but it always says ‘unable to read data’.

Mines a 2004 so maybe it will, maybe it won’t. I’ll give it a go and see what happens.

My pioneer head unit now supports obd data (via the phone app) so was looking into a suitable code reader.
Not sure which one to go for and which is supported by Apple (wifi or Bluetooth 🤷‍♂️)

This is interesting, I’ve been after some kind of digital speedo. How did you route the cable?

I fitted an oil pressure guage to my Z3 mounted it in an A pillar pod used an electric guage wired to its sender unit fitted with an extension to the oil pressure switch in the engine bay. Could be done on the Z4 easy enough for eithe pressure or temp guage.

Quite like that, looks neat. Oil temp is definitely an interesting metric to follow. One thing I wonder about: is there any bulgde/stick out area around the OBD connector… Because the last thing I would want is a plug in the way; you’d kick it every time you get in and out of the car :?
